Whenever somebody buys a new house, new construction, they are ususally pre-wired for cable tv, sound systems, theatre systems, media rooms... etc. Then when you start service the installer comes out to mount their equipment outside, in the garage or attic. If it's an older home, you could actually be collecting "T" connectors, cables... etc. If you ask the installer to remove some of the mess that's already there, it could be a much cleaner installation. If it's cable TV, sometimes you want a cable connection in a different spot in the room than the builder thought would be the best spot, or they ran out of coaxial cable and stopped there... I swear it looks that way to me sometimes!
When I came across this picture this morning it reminded me of something that could happen and not be caught till there was a problem. In this installation, the guy obviously ran his cable along the outside of the house till he got to the spot opposite the exact location injside you wanted that new connection. Then, he merely drilled a hole all the way through the exterior wall to the inside. But, in this case, he drilled right through a plumbing vent... and ran the cable through it too!
Why is this a problem you ask? A plumbing vent is there to breathe and allow water to flow through your drain lines to the sewer without a vapor lock to clog up the system. There is no rain cap on plumbing vents, so water could run down that vent pipe and seep out that little cable hole your installer drilled in it, and sewer gasses could be released in your walls. Then after he proudly shows you all your new channels and leaves, everybody unaware what has occurred. He might have seen it when he returned inside but would he care, or tell you he did a boo boo?
Mr. Installer, you're killing me! Yeah, they know how to make that TV work, it wouldn't have been that hard to look up and see if a plumbing vent was protruding through the roof in that area. Most of them probably do... this guy didn't! The problem of course is you don't know which guy you're getting, so keep an eye out while they are doing your job.
Mr Installer.. Please be careful!!
