San Diego is Ranked #3 Biotech and Life Sciences
Hub in the Nation
The Coast News, our very popular local newspaper, reported something I was already aware of, but which I suspect most area residents, and visitors, are not – San Diego is ranked #3, just behind Boston and the San Francisco, in terms of the life sciences and biotech industries.
I first learned this early this year when attending an educational event/reception with my wife for members of Biocom, an association of life sciences and biotech companies, and Pedal the Cause, an organization that sponsors bike rides in San Diego and elsewhere with a focus on raising funds for cancer research and treatment, a focus of a number of life science, biotech, and affiliated companies.
The biotech and life sciences industries are very big business here, with a wide range of biopharmaceutical, medical device/diagnostic (e.g., Impedimed in Carlsbad), lab service, distribution, and research institutes throughout the county.
At the Biocom event we learned that there are about 1600 companies in this arena in San Diego, and the economic influence is in the billions of dollars. Biocom states that 60% of the venture capital funding in the county in 2011 was for these industries; over $700 million was invested in life sciences alone in 2012.
As these industries continue to grow, and attract life science and biotech professionals here to paradise we no doubt will see some impact on the housing in terms of demand.
