San Diego is Ranked #3 Biotech and Life Sciences

Hub in the Nation

The Coast News, our very popular local newspaper, reported something I was already aware of, but which I suspect most area residents, and visitors, are not – San Diego is ranked #3, just behind Boston and the San Francisco, in terms of the life sciences and biotech industries.

The San Diego CA skylineI first learned this early this year when attending an educational event/reception with my wife for members of Biocom, an association of life sciences and biotech companies, and Pedal the Cause, an organization that sponsors bike rides in San Diego and elsewhere with a focus on raising funds for cancer research and treatment, a focus of a number of life science, biotech, and affiliated companies.

The biotech and life sciences industries are very big business here, with a wide range of biopharmaceutical, medical device/diagnostic (e.g., Impedimed in Carlsbad), lab service, distribution, and research institutes throughout the county.

At the Biocom event we learned that there are about 1600 companies in this arena in San Diego, and the economic influence is in the billions of dollars.  Biocom states that 60% of the venture capital funding in the county in 2011 was for these industries; over $700 million was invested in life sciences alone in 2012.

As these industries continue to grow, and attract life science and biotech professionals here to paradise we no doubt will see some impact on the housing in terms of demand.

Agreed. I was very impressed when I heard this, since SF and Boston have long been leaders in life sciences and biotech. San Diego and So Cal is coming up in the world in this industry. Salaries for these industries are also some of the best and are not all that different from Boston and SF from what I understand.

And the tremendous focus on cancer is huge!!

Jeff Dowler CRS you have named 3 of my favorite cities in the US. I have lived in two of them so it is natural I will have to follow you to San Diego at some point. Thanks for the great post and have a wonderful holiday season.

Well, you've certainly got better weather in San Diego over San Franciso! But my mother would disagree with that statement because she liked cold and fog.

Thanks, Patty. It's a pretty impressive statistic

Larry - they are mine too.  So come on out. at least for a visit

Barbara-Jo - definitely. Biotech is growing in leaps and bounds

Elizabeth - yep on the weather for sure, and it's far less expensive here. East Bay weather is better from what I have experienced than SFO. But you have to admit SF is a very cool city in many ways

Noah - indeed. And some companies doing some amazing things for cancer research and other health related issues.

Dagny - I think it WILL be a boon. This industry keep growing and it will be easy to attract employees here because of the weather, and salaries I understan are pretty comparable (and it's less expensive than in SF).

I think it is, too. I'm glad to see SD getting the recognition it deserves for something other than the weather, the military and tourism
