If you ask a person what there favorite color is, would it surprise you if they said blue? Well may be not considering that 53% of the population will choose Blue or a shade of it.  According to: http://webcenters.netscape.compuserve.com/homerealestate/package.jsp?name=fte/popularcolor/popularcolor
However 53% of the population would NOT pick that for the color of the exterior of their home. Just so you know I am not singling out BLUE.  We can take into consideration other colors such as yellow, red, green, purple, orange or even chartreuse. (Before you get all fired up about what I am about to say I will be the first to say there is always an exception to the rules and I will post some of those exceptions)

Before picking a color there are 3 MUST DO's that you should not and really cannot afford to not do.

1. Drive around your neighborhood, note the homes in the area what colors are appealing to you which aren't.
2. Know the architectural style of your home, and what was where the colors intent for that style of home.
3. Look at the houses that touch (directly next to) your home.

Okay the reason for these 3 MUST DO's are the following.

1. See what is pulling your attention in a positive way, this will help you know what your really like verses what you think you may like.
2. Take those colors that appeal to you and see what style of home there were on and how does it compare to yours. For example if you saw a beautiful soft creamy yellow on a Victorian that may not look so well on your Frank Lloyd Wright home.

3. What homes are in direct sight of your home. When you look at your property do you see the neighbors wall? I was brought to a house that was not selling and I was asked to see what I could do to help improve it's chances, when I pulled up to this soft grey/blue home I saw directly the soft peach house and the baby yellow house that were in my line of sight of this home. Now if I was planning a baby shower or if these homes were the beautiful painted ladies in San Francisco that might have been okay. But it wasn't it they were traditional single level wood and stucco homes.
4.  You want your home to look it's best and fit in not saying it need to be a cookie cutter but at least feel like it's not the odd man out.
Odd house on the block

The most popular colors or shades for homes are earth tones on Modern, Contemporary, Traditional or Craftsmen style homes.  Pastel or softer shades of the primary colors are very charming on Victorian or Cottage homes.  Here are some homes that I corrected the exterior colors on. As a Realtor I believe in marketing my clients homes I need to help them make their home more marketable. That would included helping them create an inviting and appealing home in and out. I hope you found these tips beneficial or at least entertaining. If you have more to add or if you have something you disagree with I would be interested in your comments.

Here are some of my before and afters
