Today's Merrie Monarch Parade was great fun.  The weather cooperated (a little rain before to cool things down).  You gotta love a town where the parade has the mayor walking down the street in a pair of jeans and waving to everyone.

There were Pa'u riders representing each of the islands (including Ni'ihau) in their ceremonial colors.  Even the horses were adorned for the event.  A number of high schools bands, various county departments and office, the police, firefighters, etc.  Of course, several halau were there dancing on their floats and musicians playing.

It took over 2 hours to finish -- but like so many things that was just because it was running on "Hawaiian time" -- no rush, no worries, it'll be done when it gets done.

Aloha John,  It looks like the festival is off to a great start.  Has Aloha Air closing negatively impacted attendance?

Good start!?!  It's nearly over!  Tonight is the last night of the competition and then Merrie Monarch will be pau.

Aloha Air did impact things because many of the hula halau were booked on them.  Also, the ATA closing was another hit -- since ATA had the only mainland-to-Hilo flight.  We're coping though.

Aloha John,

Thanks for the post. I heard it was another great year for the festival despite the airline fiasco.

Peace

John, I guess with weather and landscape like yours it gives you lots of reason to celebrate. The mayor gets my vote for the bluejeans. He can't be a bad guy. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Later in the rain~Deb
