"Expensive" is a relative term when discussing the prices of homes. In the Winnetka and North Shore area of Chicago, the average home price was $1,091,000 in 2014 (Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Northfield, and Glencoe.) The average house price in the United States, on the other hand, was $175,000 (October 2014.)
Obviously, a million-dollar home is a big deal in Montana and just par-for-the-course in this area. But it's still fun to see what the highest prices are in different parts of the country and what you get for your money.
Some standouts:
Least Expensive Most Expensive Home - Fargo, North Dakota
The least expensive most expensive home is listed for $2.849 million. The house has 7400 sq. ft and just over an acre of land. Sounds like a house on Woodley or Indian Hill Roads to me.
Most Expensive Home - Beverly Hills, California
Who knew that in the middle of Beverly Hills you could own 25 acres of prime land. But with a home that has 53,000 sq. ft. a large lot would be a nice accompaniment. You can see this house and land on the map to the right.
Most Land - Hume, Virginia
$23.95 million will get you a whoppping 2000 acres of land. Bonus: 3500-bottle wine cellar.
Smallest Lot - Rehoboth, Delaware
It doesn't matter that this home has just .34 of an acre and is listed for $6.7 million. It has panoramic ocean views, and that's what you're paying for.
Plainest Home - Islesboro, Maine
Sturdy Maine has a typical clapboard New England Style home listed for $9.75 million. A simple white home with few adornments is just what you would expect in this part of the country. So what's so special about it? How about 8,600 ft of waterfront! We swoon around here for 100 ft of beach - so imagine an ocean coastline of this magnitude.
Comes with a Barn - Thackerville - Oklahoma
$10.8 million gets you 744 acres and a 50-stall mare barn. No stallions allowed, I guess.
Unusual Land - Shoal Creek, Alabama
This 55,000 sq. ft home has its lot in the shape of a guitar. Look:
Most Unusual Ceilings - Santa Fe, New Mexico
A quintessential Southwest adobe style home is listed for $14.7 million and features stitched-leather ceilings.
Easiest Transportation - Gold Beach, Oregon
Located on the coast, this beautiful wood-timbered home offers a helipad for quick getaways and is listed for $15.9 million.
Illinois Home - Barrington
In our state, the most expensive home is listed in Barrington for $19.98 million. Previously, the most expensive home was right here in Winnetka - Le Grand Reve on Locust Road that was originally listed for $32 million. It never sold and has been taken off the market.
For Golf Lovers - Carmel, Indiana
For $25 million, you can have 106 acres and a 27-hole golf course! My math tells me that a country club membership is less expensive - but the home is gorgeous too.
Unusual Feature - Lahaina, Hawaii
A feature that we Midwesterns can only dream of - movable walls of glass. Located on the western tip of Maui, it sits right on the ocean with magnificent views.
Largest Garage - Park City - Utah
Whoa - okay, believe this: a 22-car garage is yours for $34 million. And 60 acres with a 22,000 sq. ft home.
Largest Home - Alton, New Hampshire
Not only does this $49 million home have 1,594 feet of ocean beach, the house itself is 63,029 feet!
Smallest Home - Islesboro, Maine
Back to this home listed for $9.75 million with 3500 sq. ft. (but it has that great stretch of private beach.)
