Out of The Closet in Pasadena

Out of the Closet

Even though it’s a donation

It feels a little selfish

After all, I am opening up space in my house -- closets and cupboards and cabinets

I always thought I lived pretty simply

Minimalism to the extreme some might say

But stuff happens

And although it doesn’t grow,

it certainly seems that it could be a possibility

Toss, recycle, repurpose

It should be a mantra, right?

Anyway, this past week I gathered up a carload of stuff

and made a trip to Out of The Closet as I do a couple of times a year.  Where does all of this stuff come from?

Out of the Closet is a non-profit chain of thrift stores owned and operated by AIDS Healthcare Foundation(AHF) based in Los Angeles but now with stores in both Southern and Northern California, Texas, New York, Washington and Florida.    Merchandise comes from donations so the revenue is based on the charity of the neighborhood.   That revenue helps provide medical services, research, prevention and education for AHF.   You can check out more details, store locations and additional services available at www.outofthecloset.org.    In Pasadena, the Out of the Closet store is located just east of Pasadena City College(PCC) at 1726 East Colorado Boulevard.

Come clean out your closet...the benefits are pretty terrific.

I think it feels good to free up space in the closet.  I have a pile of stuff to donate, I'll do some more clearning out over the holidays.

Michael-What a great way to give back and it is amazing how much we can accumulate. I will be doing that a lot this coming year. Lighten my load and make more room in my woman cave for just what I need.  This organization is sure for a great cause

Good for you Michael.  And no matter what you are freeing the space up for, it is never selfish if someone else is benefiting from your generosity!

Good morning Michael, it's always good to check the organization and how they are helping the community before giving. Out of the Closet is a great one to donate to.

Hi Michael - The thrift stores we have here are the usual, and it has never been totally clear exactly who benefits and how, but they do get our donations other than clothing, which we take to the homeless shelters. I'd enthusiastically support AHF if they were operating locally.

Hi Michael,  I love the name of this store.  It pretty much says it all.  Pull the items out of your closet and bring them here.  Very nice.

Michael - What a great way to bring in the new year, than by opening up some valuable storage space, and giving some unused, or unwanted items another chance at a useful life with someone else!  Happy New Year!

Thanks to each of you for stopping by and your comments --- it's always interesting to see something you have donated "highlighted" in one of the store's creative display windows.   The money each store generates through sales goes to many worthwhile programs.

AHF is an organization that has donated so much to the community and continues to do so.

Hi Michael - that is awesome that you donate to needy charities, and there are so many who are definitely in need. Thanks for sharing this info about this charity.

Chief Cook keeps things pretty organized around here, and she recycles and donates stuff regularly.  If I weren't an antique dealer and garage saler and birdhouse builder, etc.....we probably would have three room in the house without anything in them!
