For those living in the Greater Sacramento Region, we are a mere 90 miles away from San Francisco. It makes for a great one gas tank, day-trip.
Among the landmarks, events and attractions, on the list of things to see, is the astonishing Palace of Fine Arts. The Palace originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, will celebrate its 100th birthday this coming year.
Architect Bernard R. Maybeck, was challenged with the task of tapping his well- known innovative ideas. He settled on a theme that conjured visions of Roman ruins. Yet, while playing host to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which opened on February 20th 1915, San Francisco was honoring the discovery of the Pacific Ocean and the completion of the Panama Canal. The city was also celebrating its resurrection after the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire.
Since its original building almost 100 years ago, The Palace of Fine Arts has undergone several rebuilding and renovation projects.
During the period of the Great Depression of the 1930s, W.P.A. artists were commissioned to replace deteriorating murals on the ceiling of the rotunda.
The Palace today houses the Exploratorium, which operates with a conviction and understanding of nature, accompanied with an appreciation of the arts and the sciences.
