Yik Yak social media app causing controversy

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Zion Realty

Yik Yak is a relatively new Social Media app released in 2013. It quickly became one of the 10 most downloaded social media apps in the country. However, some experts have called the app a breeding ground for gossip and harrassment.

Yik Yak allows it's users to write 200-character posts (similar to Twitter), do so anonymously, and respond to people within a 10-mile radius (like Tinder), making it a sort of anonymous bulletin board. The app's main target audience so far has been College campuses. Recently, students at Rowan University in New Jersey used the app to talk about a nude video involving other students, and police charged two University of Southern Mississippi students with felonies for threats made using the app.  This has lead to some schools completely banning the use of the app on campuses.

So far, locally here at Arizona State University, the administration doesn't seem to care much about Yik Yak stating that they had yet to receive a complaint relating to the app.

Outside of College campuses, the app functions more like the world's most efficient bulletin board. For example, a tourist in Mexico City recently asked other app users for suggestions on the best restaurants to dine at. The app could also prove useful during huge events or crisis situations when users could get real-time updates on what's happening near them.

Time will tell whether Yik Yak is a Social media platform that is here to stay but like most other Social media apps there are always going to be those individuals who use it for sinister purposes.

I remember when it was first introduced but I didn't see a real need for it myself. College communities or vacation cities may be more of it's targeted audience Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert . Did you get a chance to try it?

Tom Arstingstall, General Contractor, Dry Rot, Water Damage Sacramento, El Dorado County - (916) 765-5366 - Once I read up on it I honestly had no desire to get involved with it. I'm already on Twitter which is sort of the same thing but it at least holds peolpe accountable for the things they post as you can't post anonymously like Yik Yak allows you to.

Nicole, Recent trouble here with the app at a local high school with someone posting bomb threats.  But I think it turned out to not be so anonymous after all.

Apps...a new way to communicate...It makes you wonder how all this will affect TV commercials, the U.S. post office and social interactions too

Nicole- I was not familiar with YikYak but have heard of other apps that allow for anonymous postings.  I guess it's ok for a particular demographic.

There's another app called Cyberdust that's relatively new. The whole point behind it is that yours posts automatically get deleted minutes after you post them and no record of them will be kept anywhere.

Hello Nicole Doty,  I see that Santa has you on the good list for tonight.  I am not a fan of this one, I saw it after it came out but passed on it.

I never heard of it but right off the bat, I'm not loving the anonymous component of it. Keyboard courage is what they call that nonsense and really, who needs it?

Merry Christmas Nicole.  I do not like anonymity at all.  Makes it too easy for BS.  Just like someone/stranger can talk much differently on the phone than in person. Put your name on it or don't bother with it.  Mark

Nicole, this is all news to me. I'm selective when it comes to Social Media and how I'm going to use it. I'm not familiar with Yik Yak but it sounds kind of frightening because it can get someone into big trouble with the law.

The problem I see here with so many new Social Media sights is they aren't regulated, tested and rated so that people know a good one from one from a bad one that can potentially get one into hot water. What you described on the campus scene is very scary. Does it have to be a universal problem before somebody takes action?

If you learn more about this, I hope you'll keep us in the loop. Thank you so much Nicole for bringing this to my attention. I'm in hopes you get featured!
