Everyone is always looking for more storage right? Small living spaces can especially come up short on places to put your stuff. Fear not, open bookcases and shelves are a great solution. You can find practically any style, size and price to fit your needs. These type units can help keep a space visually open and will complement and accent your wall colors. They are also great for creating a focal point in a room that has none.
Mix it up when filling your piece. Pair colorful books with a fancily framed photo or two. Decorative boxes and baskets can hold items like remote controls, music (if you still have a CD collection) and keys. Flowers and greenery also look great and will liven your space.
Open bookcases and shelves not only hide clutter and display your favorite treasures, they can be used to define spaces.
Slimmer units 11" to 18" deep can make a great room divider in large and open rooms that have no defined areas. You can also create unique set ups and designs with stackable and folding units. The sky's the limit. Remember fewer larger pieces work better in small spaces. Too many small things going on will stress out the eye and make your space seem even smaller.
Two of my favorite places to find unique and functional shelving are IKEA and Cost Plus World Market. These places are budget friendly and you can find sturdy pieces that will blend with almost any style you like. The first piece pictured above is made by Coaster and retails for around $200.00. Coaster units can be found at many retailers and on line.
