It Felt A Little Like Kitschmas

Yes, I know there’s a more significant meaning behind Christmas.

Really, I do know.

I understand the origination

But sometimes, it’s good to laugh.

A few years back when the kids in the family were just about

out of their teens,

We stopped doing mass exchange of gifts and drew names and came up with an allocated maximum dollar amount to be spent

on that person.

Either at the same time or a year later a modified white elephant gift was made a part of our traditional Christmas Eve events.   Originally it was something that was given to us we either didn’t want or had no use ---- typically tchotchke kinds of things.   One embarrassing caveat was later added -- the white elephant couldn’t be a re-gift from anyone who would be attendance that evening.

Refinements and enhancements are a part of each year.

So what did I receive this year as my white elephant gift?

Kitschmas

A little bit of Christmas Kitschmas

Joy Daniels - that's my plan.

Noah Seidenberg - I'm not sure how many people outside those who read this post will ever see the dancing hula girl.

Michael- I love it when these kinds of gifts are exchanged. So, what kind of car will you be buying to go with your new dashboard ornament?

Jon Kolsky -- sometimes while shopping or going through a closet, a certain item just seems to jump up and practically shout "White Elephant".

lol, it is true, a lot of people recycle gifts:)

I received last year the ugliest plate( yep, handmade, but obviously, the previous owner of it received it as a gift as well). I did not want it, but would feel terrible to give this unwanted item to anyone else. So, I donated it.

Michael - How perfect is that!  I can just see that mounted on your dash board and the looks you'll get from home and condo buyers once they are in the car with you - talk about an ice breaker!  Aloha!

Michael,  That is hillarious.  I really think you should place him on your dash board.  If someone makes you mad as you are driving along the California highways, you can just glance at the hula man and start smiling.  Or if you put clients in your car and need an ice breaker, hula man is there for you.  I love it!

Michael, you mean you won't place that sexy Hula Girl on your dash? Maybe you'll get a bobble dog next year.

Oh you lucky lucky man!  Such a prize!

In my family it was called the Yankee Swap.  Some serious battles took place each year, usually between my aunt and my mom. But, the drama was the best part...it's so disappointing if everyone just opens and sits without stealing from someone else.

Beth Atalay -- a bobble dog would be the next natural gift, wouldn't it?

Sharon Tara - a Yankee Swap -- love the regional differences - since my family's tradition with this is on the newer side, it is really a work in progress(or is it decline?).  The drama is definitely a big part of the event and it would be very disappointing if there wasn't just a bit of good-nature coveting.

Hi Michael.  We would love to see the hula guy.  We are both going snow crazy right now with these terrible temps and snow non-stop.  Sunny Cali sounds like perfect medicine for these winter blues.

Well it would have to be the granny panties that were 5 sizes too big. That made it even more funny.

That gift would’ve been perfect when I was stationed in Guam. By the time the Christmas trees got to us the needles  were shedding and it just didn’t feel like Christmas. Now I get to spend all my Christmases with loved ones and it makes all the difference in the world. Merry Christmas Michael 🎅
