Free Speech - What if you had to pay to comment on ActiveRain?

check Pay with your ActiveRain points...

Qassia tried it... charging members to comment, rather than paying for comments.  Qassia has Qassia dollars rather than points but what if you had to pay with your ActiveRain points for making comments on ActiveRain?  What if other ActiveRain members paid you points to comment on your blog?

Join Qassia- Qassia is not just real estate but has a real estate directory. Qassia is a beta.

Would making points cost points (but pay points to the blogger) stop the "water cooler" atmosphere?

Would paying to comment reduce

the "great post thanks for sharing it" type comment?
the gaming "hey come visit my blog since I came to your blog"  type comment?
all the "stoopid" comments that add nothing to the conversation...

Would paying to comment be a nightmare... for ActiveRain to implement and keep track of... not just awarding points automatically but transferring points from the commenter paying for the comment to the blogger being paid for the comments...  Would paying to comment level the playing field from older members to newer members?  Or would it just make it more difficult for newer members to get comments?

It did not work on Qassia... I am not sure the membership of Qassia now but it topped 10,000 in the past month.  There was not commenting on Qassia until very recently...

"Free Speech Extended

When we released comments we thought that it was a clever idea to cut down on comment spam by charging users $2 Qassia dollars for leaving a comment. The credit would be transferred to the intel contributor, as a sort of compensation.

But few people left comments, so we dropped the fee to $1.

This had no effect either, so as of today, leaving comments is free of charge."

You do not get Qassia money for commenting... you get points on Qassia for referrals and for adding "intel" content.

More about Qassia (these posts are all on ActiveRain... don't you worry your pretty little head about going outside ActiveRain...)

If ActiveRain Points were money?

What the heck is Qassia? Helpful hints...

Comments to posts on ActiveRain are money in the bank.  It's all about synergy.

I think eventually the point system may be abandoned because people who leave "hey, great post" comments may just be supportive types, who aren't necessarily out to gain points, and if the hubbub continues, point system will just be another irritant. Who knows, unless you chart out who is doing that on a consistent basis to ramp up their totals. As you know, I'm from a PBB background and that's how it's done there - you praise good posts and ignore icky or stupid or bad ones (relative to your interests and sensitivities of course).

Praising the post or the writer has long been a problem with PBB IMHO. That's why they are so boring. People  take sides, rate the post, praise the post  but don't discuss a topic.  Often they don't discuss the topic because they don't know anything to add.  Why not keep quiet when you have nothing to add to a discussion?

It is socially acceptable to say "hey great post" on ActveRain. It does not elevate disussions on ActiveRain. It would not outside ActiveRain either. I don't know that they will do away with points but Bob Stewart said they are trying to make them more ???? meaningful???

OK it was not "meaningful" it was relevant....

Bob Stewart wrote:

we have multiple discussion every week about how to make the points MORE relevant...........and we have some GREAT ideas. If I was a betting man, I'd bet you will see them soon (wait, that would make me Tim Donaghy......

is relevant = meaningful?

If making points relevant is a goal does that mean they are now irrelevant?
