5 Ways To Become Debt Free!

  1. Pay Attention To The Details!

Managing your finances is all about paying attention to the details! What rates of interest am I paying on credit cards? How much interest am I earning on my bank accounts. What does my cash flow look like each month? Is there more going out than coming in? Am I paying down debt or holding my balance in place? Best way to become debt free is to look into the details and create a plan to get out!

  2. Think Long Term!

Getting out of debt is a long term plan, for most people its 3-5 years. Thinking long term requires you to make significant changes in your spending habits and forces you to make harder decisions about buying what you actually need and not what you want. When you start its a good idea to say I'm putting this much money away each month no matter what happens, or I'm going to pay this much on my debt each month to pay down credit cards. Its about committing to your plan regardless of circumstance, because in the long-term you will come out ahead!

  3. Don't Be Afraid to Ask!

The most common thing I hear from people is that they are nervous to call their bank or credit card company to inquire about interest rate reduction, or see if there are options available to them like balance transfers or temporary rate reductions. CALL YOUR CREDITORS! More often than not people are willing to work with you. Life is unpredictable and we do suffer setbacks like unemployment, unforseen medical expenses, car accidents, etc. Communication is key to getting out of debt and might save you some interest points which can help you pay down debt faster. You'll never know until you ask!

  4. Start Saving & Start Paying!

I'm taking the step right now because I've struggled financially since getting out of college. Start saving something per month whether its $20 or $100 and throw as much money at debt as possible. My wife and I decided were going on vacation in december. We figured out that saving $50 a month from each of our paychecks would give us $1200 in december to go on vacation at our favorite place in Cannon Beach. Were also making additional payments on credit cards and have recently paid off 2 of them. This strategy does work and takes a bit of time, but you will be proud of yourself when it happens! Stay committed to saving and paying down debt with any additional income! Paid off credit card means extra income in your pocket every month!

  5. Experience over Material

One of the best ways to refocus yourself financial is to think experiences vs. material. Sure we all want a nice car, flatscreen tv, and the latest cell phone, but what about travel, expericing the world? I use to be a very materialistic person, however recently I decided that I've missed out on a lot of experiences to see the world and get new perspectives from places away from where I live. By focusing on experiences in life your able to save more money for longer periods because you'll be more focused on using that money you would have spent on a car or tv or phone, on a trip worth a 1,000 pictures and words!

Keep saving and paying down debt and you'll start experience a new life at home and into the world!

Chris, it sounds like you have learned how to become debt free through personal experience. It's good to see that you are taking on that responsibility and sharing what you have learned with others. Saving is also important just in case you have some sort of emergency - car needs large repair, lose job, etc.

Agreed. I've been unemployed a couple times and have a large amount of student loan debt. Its a hard hole to get out of, but climbing out feels better and better each day. I'm just looking forward to vacation in 12 months!

My savings have been valuable in those circumstances. Thank you for the input Troy!

Chris--you are SPOT ON with this post!!!!! And how young you are to have "gotten it"--I'm like a proud mama. My husband and I JUST talked about not buying "stuff", but having experiences together instead of Christmas presents.

This advice is like GOLD. You need to get featured with this one! And what hotel at Cannon Beach? We always go there for special occasions...The SurfSand as it's dogfriendly is our favorite, but expensive! We go there in Dec, too...you might go mid-week, it can cost you less and since it's out of season, it's a better rate usually wherever you go there, too. I don't think they're part of AmazonLocal, or Groupon, but those are two to check out for getting better pricing on hotels...good luck and you're on the right track to Debt Free-dom!

P.S. I would go "public" with this if you're comfortable with it, Chris, because you could be reaching future clients this way and it's such valuable how-to info, that it needs to be seen!

And it's not too long.

Gayle, Thank you for your comments! I am planning on getting a rainmaker account so it can be public to all.

As far as cannon beach the surfsand is where its at! yes its expensive, but the quality of the hotel is definately worth it. We showed up only get a room with water view because our room was too close to a party they were having. Talk about customer service! They also serve fresh cookies and milk everyday as well as strawberry mint water! If you haven't made it at home do it! Its amazing!

Have you checked out the sleepy monk? They have the best coffee I've ever had in the NW!

Hi Chris, I agree with Gayle. This information needs to be seen by the public who are buying houses. Get that Rainmaker account. You will be glad you did.

Roger D. Mucci , geez, I'm so out of the loop! Thanks for clearing that up, and obviously, Chris we want you to go "public", so 'nuff said.

Oh, how I LOVE The SurfSand. Yup, the cookies, but they also have a chalkboard welcoming your four-leggeds at the front desk. I have blogged about them several times.

Sleepy Monk? How could one be sleepy if it is the best caffeine in the PNW, I ask you??

Now I feel dedicated to write a blog post about that place... Once I get my pictures off the camera I'll write a post showing why I love that place so much.

I will tell you the sleepy monk is amazing. Its a coffee place by day and bar by night. Best of both worlds for vacation. The roast their own beans and make homemade chocolate whip cream drizzled with chocolate or caramel sauce for your drink. There aren't many words to describe it other than amazing. Check out their site below.

There coffee isnt the cheapest, but it seriously is good, you will go from sleepy to ready to take on the day in minutes! Fellow AR members in the PNW area, this is a must go! :-)

Chris,  These are some very helpful tips.  I love the one about calling your creditors and asking them to reduce the interest rate.
