Anyone able to cross "Tardiness' off their Resolution List?

By

I came across an article on FaceBook yesterday that was quite similar to a blog I wrote a few years back.  The writer was of the same opinion:   No you are NOT running LATE - You are RUDE and Selfish

He also received MANY interesting comments, many of which missed the point entirely and others who just wanted to make excuses for their bad habit.  (Just like my blog post many moons ago!)

We were not talking about the odd occurrence when LIFE has a funny way of happening.  It was directed towards people who habitually make a point of not being where they say they'll be, when they say they'll be, OVER and OVER.

Just this morning I read two FaceBook posts about people texting to say they're on their way but already 15-30 minutes late for the originally set appointment time.

Yet, these same people know when it is time to leave work.

They can manage to arrive on time for a vacation flight.

I believe they even know how to be on time to plant flowers and bulbs, etc!

How does that work?

Are you a person who CONTINUALLY runs LATE?

I'm really very curious to learn about how this happens.

I cannot imagine telling someone I'll meet them at 2pm and not do it.

I am fascinated with how this has almost become accepted behaviour.

I often wonder were these people late to their own birth perhaps?  Is that where it started??  If you are one of these people, call you Mother ask her if you were a late delivery, LOL

If you can spare a moment, will you share how this came to be a part of who you are?  Or was this who you used to be?  How did you overcome habitual lateness?

I'll wait :)

I think it's because some people think that they are much more important than others and yes it's rude.  It is one thing to be 5 or 10 minutes late but an hour, I don't think so.

Also I haven't heard the term "tardy" since the Nuns in grammar school.

I use to always be 15 minutes early or I considered myself late.  Then I started getting busier and busier and didn't leave in time to be late. Then I got embarrassed because I was late and said no more.  Now I am only late when it is not my fault.  But mostly whomever I am meeting is late....

I am not late.  In fact I'm always early.  I have no patience with folks who are late.  It's inconsiderate.

What are they doing, making an entrance.

They're not that important.

Liz Wallace I agree:  people have an over inflated opinion of themselves and attempt to use lateness as a control mechanism because the rest of their life is so out of control.

PS   I used the word "Tardy" in my attempt to be polite!

Evelyn Johnston I'm glad you took back control of your time.  It is much less stressful :)

Lenn Harley I think that is exactly what they are attempting . . .   Look at me, look how important and busy I am!

They don't realize that people look at them and think "what an inefficient scatterbrain that can't even manage their time"!

I was so worried when my little one left the nest that she would never get up and go to class on time.  She was the most difficult person to wake up her entire life no matter WHAT time she went to bed.  But she fooled me.  She finally got it together and gets up and gets going to be there on time.

I admit I don't go to work at exactly 9 a.m. ... but if I have an appointment at 9 I'm there at 8:50

Tammy Lankford that's the beauty of being self-employed: we don't have to be in at 9am if we haven't planned to do so!

I've always believed if we don't do everything for someone, that they'll learn to do it for themselves - you're a good Mama!

Like Lenn Harley I am not late.  I am 99.9% of the time early. I'd rather be waiting for people than have people waiting for me. That said, it does not mean in any way that I like or appreciate having to wait for people

Kathleen Daniels I don't know too many of us who do appreciate being kept waiting and yet we seem to be doing so more and more!

People who really do run perpetually late really are rude and self-absorbed.  At best, they would be disorganized.

I once begged for something to be done about this with agents and their office duty. I was told I was being petty. Wow. Really? I think not. It is inconsiderate to the other agents and to the broker who owns the company. AND to anyone that has a listing with the company.

There are few things I hate more than tardiness, Susan. So I am always a bit early. When I'm not on time, people start worrying because they know how fanatical I am about being on time. Being late truly is rude and selfish and you're just telling the other party that they are less important than you.

Joni Staples at my former Brokerage being late was practically celebrated and I swear became a contest of who could pretend they were the busiest and keep others waiting the longest.  Late for weekly meetings, late for caravan, late for duty or simply not even bothering to show up and letting no one know about it.

I got to the point where I was more embarassed for them than anything else.  So sad to go thru life with so little to have control over other than grand entrances!

Nina Hollander I'm the same with people worrying themselves sick if I am ever late (usually because I'm traveling with someone else!)

I remember years ago I had to take a car with 2 other women to an event at which we were to be seated at the head table.  These other 2 were not even showered when I arrived at their hotel room to meet and was gobsmacked that they had rescheduled our limo for 45 minutes later!!! I had no number to call the event and didn't even know the address - I was horrified!
When we finally did arrive at the event over an hour late they felt it appropriate to RUN to where 100's of people had been kept waiting and were shocked when I refused.  I said it was bad enough that we'd kept these people waiting, a few moments more wasn't going to make up for it and I preferred to arrive unflustered, calm and serene and make my sincere apologies like a professional.
When we entered the room, all these people came running up to me with their genuine concern, assuming the worst and the other 2 were left straggling to take their seats.  It was publicly stated that when they saw I was ok it was just assumed the other 2 had kept me waiting too.

It is nice when our reputations can precede us in a good way!

Susan Emo It totally affects our reputation EVEN if we are not the one practicing habitual tardiness or repeatedly not showing up for shifts. The public knows. ESPECIALLY if the office is free standing and they can see if cars are there or not. If your in the middle of a high rise tower, the public may never know.

Susan... in your place I'd have been spitting bullets! I have a brother who is chronically late so when we needed him to be somewhere at a specific time, we'd push up the appointed time by at least 30 minutes!
