Mad Men, Don Draper, and Real Estate -3-

“ I don’t like to talk about myself” says Don Draper , “it is a sin of pride to go on about yourself like that” Draper continues.  Of course, he is trying to diminish his own upbringing which is not as it appears.  But then, think about it, why do Realtors® go on about how many millions of dollars of real estate they have sold?  They fact that they sold x thousands, or x millions of real estate does not really impact if he/she can sell your property or can help you find a property.

Is the seller going to be influenced by “reputation”, because as one advertiser says “we sell 90% of the properties we list” but then listen to what is not said.  Ask the questions about what is not said.  Decades ago when I taught high school, I used a headline from a tabloid, “Father of Cher’s Baby Is A Married Man” and I asked my students about what it conveyed.  You too can think about it.

When advertising is presented in a too good to be true scenario, “If We Don’t Sell Your House, We’ll Buy It” that may be a fact, but at what cost?  How?  Why?  I learned that lingo when I first started out in real estate.  I didn’t like it, what I told you was true, it was what I didn’t tell you in that advertisement which bothered me.  And so I never used it.

In discussing the Presidential Campaign for Dick Nixon, one of the partners says, “We know better what Dick Nixon needs.”.  But then was countered by “We will give our people what they want”.  So there lies the dilemma.  Do we as Realtors® give what people need, or what they want?  How do we combine both the need and the want?

If I asked you to draw up a list of what you need, and then another list of what you want, would those lists be significantly different?  And would they be different for each member of the family?  Maybe that would be a good exercise for the family who is thinking about buying….what do you need?  What do you want?

To hand such a list to your Realtor®, I believe, would be like a gift from God.  Because then your Realtor® could then begin to have some meaningful dialogue and that list will help him/her to begin to search out properties which suit you rather than just properties.

Terry,  I was at a seminar where Joe Stumph was showing the importance of taking the question 7 levels deep.  Keep asking beyond the answer.  When Joe had reached the 7th level you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium and see many misty eyes.  Digging to get the real answer in our business is a benefit to us as well as our clients.  Mark
