As is usual in my life lately, I was just about to write about the importance of checking for bees, wasps and hornets when I discovered a swarm of bees on MY house.  Yes, sports fans, I was busy trying to coax my lawnmower into mowing the front yard just a tad shorter for summer so that the Bermuda would come up (a favorite spring pastime in Arizona) when I heard a loud and angry collective buzz from the Ficus tree above my head.  Upon further review, I discovered a swarm of very angry bees swarming on the corner of my eaves, likely getting into my attic (I hope not...).  My son threw caution to wind as he yelled BEEEEEEEEEES!  and ran for our front door.  Now the cool thing (if there is one) is that they are swarming right at a corner window so we can observe them from the safety of our castle.  I found a good article that describes the do's and don'ts of dealing with bees, but the best advice is:

1.  DON'T MESS WITH THEM!

2.  CALL A PROFESSIONAL TO DEAL WITH THEM!

Read the article for more detailed info:

By the way, if you ARE a professional pest control agent, give me a call!  My dogs can't use the inside toilet (I've tried, God knows I tried...) so they will have to go out eventually!

Hi Vince,

I had this problem once before and I delayed in solving the problem.  The bees got into the walls of my house, which had to be partially removed by the professionals once I called them.  My advice is to act fast and do not delay.  Bees can do quite a bit of damage.

Yep, they are VERY tough to deal with - my parents in Tucson have had this happen 3 times.  Each time was a little harder to chase them off (one time there were estimated to be somewhere between 500000 and 750000 bees - the pest control/bee keeper that came to fix it said he had never seen such a large wild swarm.

Hi Vince,

Wow, they sound really hard to deal with.  Good info.  Have a great day.  Michael A. Caruso

They hurt or kill many people and pets every year in the Southwest - mainly, they are a nuisance that one has to deal with every Spring and Summer.  Oh welll, my grass will have to wait...!

Vince we had a football size hive underground in our backyard!!  My husband did some research and I think he learned that if you wait till dusk they've returned for the day or something like that.  Anyways he practically donned a zoot suit, filled a 5gal bucket with water, armed himself with wasp/bee spray and went to work.  He got 3/4 of the hive free from the dirt with one scoop.  Sprayed it good with water before dropping it in the bucket of water and sprayed the other half with the spray.  We got it out and let the hive soak about a week with a lid on the bucket before disposing of it!!!!  Scary!!  I had no idea they lived underground!  Be careful!
