Simply stated: Greenville is a fun place to be! Greenville is continually being internationally recognized on blogs, in magazines and travel publications as the place to visit/move! In fact Greenville SC is getting so much love that the Huffington Post recently published a satire blog entitled '9 Reasons You Shouldn't Visit/Move to Greenville'! It made us giggle! You just can't escape Greenville's delicate charm! I often turn to my fiancée and say "We are so lucky to live here!" and I mean every single syllable!
Myself (admin Courtney) and our team's Lead Agent Bill (who you are used to seeing on AR) are actively involved in Greenville's theatre scene. And we aren't talking your average community theatre production of 'Cats'! Greenville is nationally recognized as one of the hottest theatre towns in the South East. The talent here is unbelievable and you can catch a Broadway worthy show pretty much any weekend of the year at the one of the eight theatres in town! If you are from Greenville, someone you know is probably in a show right now!
The Greenville Little Theatre is where I perform most often. They've been in the theatre business since 1926 and have a deep history here in town. The late Paul Newman's wife Joanne Woodward got her start at the Greenville Little Theatre! In fact, the theatre gives out seasonal awards in her honor. In the past our little real estate team has banked 4 of these awards! Bill has one and I have three! But hey.... he’s still the boss! ;)
If you are willing to take a trip out to Greenville, the weekend of January 23rd is a great time! Greenville Little Theatre is hosting the 6th Annual 24 Hour Play Festival! Here's how it goes: starting on Friday night at 8pm three teams of writers (myself included) will be assigned a group of actors and three different wild card items that we have to incorporate into a script. We have less than 12 hours to write a 10-minute play. It usually takes me 2 weeks if that gives you any indication as to how crunched we are for time! YIKES. Saturday morning at 8am, the directors and actors arrive, rehearse all day, gather costumes, make props, drink A LOT of coffee and at 8pm an audience of 600 gets to see what we've been up to the past 24 Hours. It is an ABSOLUTE blast and my favorite theatre event of the entire year. In the past I've acted, directed and this year I'm writing for the first time. I'm thrilled and terrifed! Having performed and directed in the past I'm the only person to have tackled all three roles! I have a nightmare every night that I get writer's block or that my fingers stop working. Blogging here on AR is getting me warmed up for the big event.
One of the more interesting aspects of the festival (and the thing that keeps the writers from writing their plays ahead of time) is the audience participation. GLT posts a poll for theatregoers to vote for three different aspects/items/character quirks that must be incorporated into the scripts and the writers are in the dark until we show up at 8pm! No cheating allowed! If you'd like to VOTE to change the fate of the writers, directors, and actors alike...click here! **Side note...Allen McCalla is the artistic director at GLT and we'd LOVE to see a life size cut out of him in EVERY SHOW!
It's amazing what people can create if they work together! I've been involved in all 6 24 Hour Play Festivals and it's by far the most rewarding, exciting and collaborative event I've ever been a part of. And I've done a lot of plays in my day!
Greenville Little Theatre rocks and is a HUGE reason why Greenville is such a cool place to visit and an even bigger reason why I love it here so much! So if you are looking for a fun place to hang out for a weekend, eat some great food and take in a show...Greenville is the place to go!
