South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade Float Still Winning

2015 is well underway and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade(which is held each January 1) is definitely behind us. During December, I told you of the city of South Pasadena and the volunteers behind the city’s self-built float parade entry entitled “Still Winning”(see end of this report for links).

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade As I mentioned in those posts, the majority of the floats in this parade are built by professionals and sponsored by large corporations.

South Pasadena was one of seven in the parade that was self-built by enthusiastic and hard working volunteers. Although the float “Still Winning” was a popular one, there was no award given to it.

South Pasadena Real Estate - REALTOR Michael JacobsAs I stopped by the South Pasadena War Memorial Building and the float building site in South Pasadena today, I was able to take some photos of the float(flowers on the float were free to any visitor) and include them with those photos taken during the construction as well as the Showcase of Floats(January 1-3).  On Saturday, January 10, 2015 the remaining flowers will be removed so that the float chassis can be reused for the Tournament of Roses Parade on Friday, January 1, 2016.    Photo number four in this post was taken today(80 degree temps today at definitely had an impact on the remaining flowers).

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade Float Still WinningThose of you who followed my posts may remember that the concept from this float came from the winning entry in a city-wide contest by a South Pasadena resident.  The theme Still Winning which was a part of the overall parade theme “Inspiring Stories” was a salute to who continue to survive breast cancer.   The float featured 20 members of the Los Angeles Pink Dragons which is comprised of breast cancer survivors who have successfully competed in dragon boat races.  The float with an oversized pink ribbon included two dragon boats with members rowing their way down the five-and-one-half mile Colorado Boulevard parade route.

Hey Michael, what a great idea behind "Inspiring Stories" and I definitely give it a gold medal! These floats are works of art and labors of love and have earned a place in the flotilla hall of fame - wish they had such a thing-it would make a great museum!

Michael Jacobs  - What a great home-town story and one that should have won - best armature float, best volunteer float, or best spirit of the parade float!  It makes me want to live in South Pasadena just to be a part of the annual parade!

Hi Miachel, I loved the photos. At least until the last one. It was very sad to see it all crumbles and dried out. But in 11 months and 23 days, we will see yet another new creation. I think Pasadena should have won an award as it was wonderfully done.

This was a terrific series, Michael Jacobs, on the Tournament of Roses parade, and I am glad that "Still Winning" was just that a winner even without an award!

Michael Jacobs ~ I can see why "still winning" is a winner... I know it was a cold day as far as Rose Parades go, but there was a lot of hot floats burning up the streets that day

Michael, when you first told us about "Still Winning" and what it stood for, it was a winner for me. When I saw it on TV with survivors in the float, it touched my heart as I thought about your post and the story behind the theme. Thank you for going throught extra lengths to share all the great pictures.

I was disappointed when I saw that they still winning float did not get an award during the Rose Bowl parade. I enjoyed your series on the Rose Bowl parade, andthink it's great that you put them altogether in your post today.

Michael so many floats get an Award because who designed it, or who sponsored it...or who paid ....etc it is always ironic that the ones that do not win actually are the Real Winners!, Endre

Thanks for stopping by and your comments on the Still Winning self-built float by the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade.  While it may not have received any formal awards, the enthusiasm expressed by the many volunteers and the cheering supporters has been admirable.
