If you are moving to Michigan you are probably wanting to know the best cities in Michigan.  How do you find them.  Here is a list of the best cities in Southeastern Michigan.  Finding a good city when you are not from the area can be a huge task.    You may be just graduating from college.  Many times making a job relocation is a necessary part of keeping a job or moving up in the company.  Moving to a new state or a new area can be overwhelming if you have never been there before.  Many times it falls on the spouse because the employee is too busy wrapping up their old job and getting accumulated in the new job.  So how do you find the best cities when relocating?  What are the top cities in the area?

Did you know there are laws prohibiting real estate agents from divulging certain information.  Real estate agents hands are somewhat tied when it comes to suggesting good cities.  Years ago the federal government passed a law for realtors about steering.  The intention was good, but it ties our hands on saying what are "good" or "bad" cities.  The law was set up to prevent for racial discrimination when it came to real estate.   A real estate agent cannot tell you what the racial make up of a city is. We cannot steer you to any one city.  So I am going to give you tips on how to find the best cities when relocating.  We can respond to questions about what are the safest cities in Michigan or where are the lake homes in Southeastern Michigan

Using online resources are your best tools.  One of the first things you should do is print a map of the metro area you are moving to.  Then put a red dot on where you will be working.  The second  step is to talk to local people about what they feel are the best cities.  Your local human resources department and new co-workers should give you a partial list of where they think are good places to live.  Ask any friends or family if they know anybody there. Then ask them for recommendations of good cities to live.      Ask where the absolute best cities are.  Ask where the high end cities of the area are.  Even if you do not want to live in those types of cities or cannot afford to live in them, look at the cities around them.  Many times the surrounding cities of that top city are very good.   Then go to using your online resources for the first time.  Google "top cities in....." or "best places to live in...." or use sperlings.com.

As a Michigan relocation buyer you you should now have a short list of potential cities to live.  One of the major concerns you should have is for our safety.  How safe is the city or what is the crime of these cities?   There are three different ways to check on this.  Here is my list of the worst Metro Detroit cities to live in based on crime and schools.  Call local police departments ask about the crime in the city and how it compares to other cities on your list.  The second way is to call a local insurance agent in the area you are moving to. .  Usually the higher the crime rates the higher the insurance rates.

So now you have a partial list of safe cities.  One of the other top concerns of the relocation buyers I work with is schools.   Usually good schools mean good resale value of a home.  The best resources to find out about schools is online.  Check the school systems website.  Google "compare schools" or "rate schools"  Good school systems attract home buyers and I believe there is a correlation best good schools and home prices in an area.  All the cities in Metro Detroit that have good to great school systems are the better areas to live.  Bad schools usually mean "rougher" cities.

Real estate agent cannot steer you away from or towards a city, but they can tell you what cities have low crime or good schools.  ASK questions of people that live there.  If you use all the tools available to you finding a great city for your family to enjoy and live should be no problem.
