red tulipsWe all know about Thomas Jefferson and his role in the founding of our country.  Some of us are also aware of his reputation as the true renaissance man: statesman, inventor, author, but we don't always think about his interest in gardening and plants.

In addition to being a destination to learn about history and architecture, Monticello is also a destination for gardeners.  The cost of a general admission ticket includes tours of the house, as well as guided tours of the restored flower and vegetable gardens which resume in April and run through the end of October.

There are special wildflower walks held on April 5, 12, and 19.  This is a hike from Monticello to the Rivanna River and lasts about 3 hours.  You should be prepared for a strenuous hike some of which is uphill.  Each of the days there are sessions beginning at 8:30 and 9:30.  Reservations are required; the number to call is 434 984-9822.

During Historic Garden Week, April 19-27 there will be several special events at Monticello.  These include the above mentioned garden tours and wildflower walks, a lecture on Thomas Jefferson, Gardener, a presentation of Monticello's Center for Historic Plants, and a vegetable garden workshop.  Information on the events at Monticello as well as other Historic Garden Week events may be found at www.vagardenweek.org

If you are planning a trip to Charlottesville, Virginia or Albemarle County this is the perfect time to come; or if you are already a resident it's a great time to pay a return visit to Monticello.

12 Comments on Springtime and the gardens at Monticello

I have been wanting to visit Monticello, and this event seems like a perfect one for me. I wish that I could attend. Well, maybe next year. I hope that residents of the region realize how lucky they are.

Pam, Monticello a great place to visit and don't forget to stop by Miche Tavern on the way for an authentic Colonial dinner. Thanks for the reminder we need to go back again.

Good Post!

Frank - Sometimes we are guilty of not taking advantage of all the wonderful things that our region has to offer.  I hope you get the opportunity to visit Monticello soon.

Michael - You are right.  Lunch at Michie Tavern is the perfect accompaniment to a day of touring Monticello.

Thank you Jane.  Virginia horse country is a very special place.  Did you ever come to Charlottesville for the races or the horse shows?

Pam:  I've never been to Monticello, but would like to get there before the end of Spring.  Can't wait to see it.

Hi Chris.  I hope you get there and although it is worth the visit in any season, springtime is the best.
