Solar Power in The Sun City

By
Real Estate Agent with EXIT West Realty

A news article this week announced that SolarCity® will begin making solar power available affordably for homeowners in El Paso, TX.

Imagine that! In a city with over 300 sunny days a year we should be able to apply affordable solar power to our homes.

It's crazy to me that we haven't been doing this forever, but the cost to retrofit an existing home with solar panels and all the other infrastucture to make it work has been so high that it would take you 25 years to recoup the cost through the savings on your energy bill, that noone was willing to do it. Or at least very few.

Now, according to the press release, SolarCity® will install all the equipment with no upfront cost to the homeowner under a lease type option. Their press release says you can get design, installation, insurance, and financing for as little as $35 per month. You can see the press release here.

Now I do not have any experience with SolarCity® but this is the first time I have heard of an affordable alternative for the average home owner in El Paso. My advice would be to do your due diligence on the company, but they did install all the solar panels on the housing at Fort Bliss.

For more information on their program visit the SolarCity® website.

Guessing as solar energy becomes more popular...the price will decrease but I would be careful with new companies in the market and research them..

This isn't a new company, they are established but have been working with big projects and with new home builders. This is an initiative to make solar power affordable to the "average Joe." Thanks for your input.

We're seeing more and more solar city and competitors in our location, too.  Hope this takes off and becomes viable.

In Hawaii, a lot of companies are doing the lease program.  One of my wife's friends 5 months ago did that Rick Snow - Selling El Paso TX .  They were in a multifamily sister and brother's families.  Previously, their electric bill was $400 a month.  Under the lease arrangement, they only paid $500 for the setup, and now pay to the Solar Company about half $200 a month for their electricity.  The agreement is for 20 years and the company maintains it.
