Living off the land in Haiku Maui - wild pig for dinner

Sometimes when we visit our cattle ranch on the north shore of Maui, we find some wild pigs running loose and tearing up the pastures. They are such a nuisance really, destroying the nice level ground and digging holes as they root for food. They are a problem all over the island as they spread a lot of invasive plant species wherever they go. So we don't feel bad when we "harvest" a few for the freezer.  There is no shortage of these pigs.

You wouldn't think these small Jack Russell dogs would be much good for pig hunting, but I'll tell you there's nothing better! They don't chase after the really big ones, which is just fine by me. They catch the smaller ones, like 50 pounds and under, which are better eating anyway.

This pig was cornered by all three of our little dogs, and quickly dispatched by my husband, with a machete!  I was impressed. It was a very efficient trip and the meat was soon cut up and chilling in the extra fridge for a few days, then into the freezer.

It's nice to have some wild mountain pig in the freezer!

Impressive dogs to be able to hold down a pig long enough to finish it with a machete, enjoy the wild pork!

I least it was quick for the pig. Interesting shot and realization of that whole process. Love and light!

Good morning Georgie. Sound like your dogs are pretty amazing. Glad that you make good use of the pig, I'm sure it will be good eating.

Make a great weekend!

Wild pigs do a lot of damage. We have them here as well. I remember eating that often in Germany. That is some GOOD food!! Do you freeze and ship?

Ok...so I do not eat meat...but while everyone else eats the pig I can go swimming in the beautiful waters!

Georgie, as Barbara-Jo Roberts Berberi, MA, TRC - Greater Clearwater Florida Residential Real Estate Professional mentioned, we also have them here. They can be very distructive and dangerous.

Thanks for your interest in this topic. Yes we make good use of the pig meat and it cooks up beautifully in the pressure cooker.

Georgie-I had no idea they had wild pigs roaming around in Hawaii. Even though I have had pigs before I had never seen a wild one before. I wonder if they taste gamey like other wild animals do.

Hello Georgie ... very interesting post and photo, and if VB was to ever purchase a dog again ... it would be a Jack Russel

Sharon Lee  It depends on many things, but the really wild looking black boars will taste more gamey than the cross-bred feral ones.  And of course the age of the critter makes a difference too.
