Visit the Uncle Remus Museum to find out about the "Briarpatch"

I recently wrote a post about an upcoming evening event called "Christmas in the Briarpatch" and someone commented on the name so I thought I would explain why Eatonton is called the Briarpatch.

It's an "Uncle Remus" reference.  We have lots of them in town because the author of the "Uncle Remus Tales", Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton. We have Briarpatch Office Products in town, The Farmers and Merchants ATM cards have long been called Tar Baby cards, Uncle Remus library, Uncle Remus Museum, and the Uncle Remus Golf Course just to name a few.

There is a little more information about the Museum in this post I wrote about Downtown Eatonton.

I have a long and very personal connection with the Museum. My first job that came with a actual paycheck was there. I was just 12 when I started working there.  I trained and then worked as a Docent there until I was nearly 30 years old. It was also my daughter's first job when she was just 14. I love the stories and have a full collection of all the books.

If you are every close to Eatonton and plan to stop by the Museum give me a call and I'll be happy to stop by and give you the personal Tammy tour.  It's a wonderful little place with a world of history in the walls of that little cabin.  And it's in the Briarpatch.  And if don't know about the Briarpatch... look up the Tar Baby and Brer Rabbit story... there's a lesson in there.

Lisa Von Domek if you have never read them you should.  Warning the dialect is hard to get used to at first.

Larry Johnston one of my little town's claims to fame

Evelyn Johnston we are very connected, my family and the museum. I love those stories.

Bob Ratliff, Broker Associate - REALTOR® 512-587-5689 I can read the stories with the dialect pretty well from all my years there and hearing it from those who trained me.

Michelle Carr-Crowe-Selling Silicon Valley Homes in Top Schools San Jose, Cupertino, Saratoga, Palo Alto-Just Call 408-252-8900 actually I've never heard that at all.  The books are all still on the market.  The movie is not, but that is only because Disney leased rights from the family and didn't buy them.  I do however have a copy.

Joe Petrowsky it's a wonderful museum.  My favorite exhibit is the carvings, but followed by a close second is the prints from Disney.
