Duvall WA Communities and the Weather

Duvall WA

Residents in the Puget Sound area are fond of saying that there is ‘localized’ weather.  It might be sunny in one area, cloudy in another area, and rainy in another.  Well, Duvall has “localized” weather, too.

The overarching community of Duvall is divided in to several separate communities.  The City of Duvall is in the center with Downtown and the residential communities surrounding Downtown in a semi-circle.  Surrounding the city in a larger semi-circle are a series of roads with the communities of Cherry Valley to the north, Kelly Road to the east and Big Rock Road to the south.  The lake community of Lake Margaret is to the northeast.  The Snoqualmie River and its valley are to the west of Duvall.

The weather varies by community.  Kelly Road may be foggy or rainy, while Downtown Duvall is sunny – with the valley foggy again.   Or it could be the other way around – sunny on Kelly Road and rainy in Downtown.

Cherry Valley is on the north side of ‘the hill’ and is in shadows during the winter months.  It’s usually colder in Cherry Valley that Kelly Road, Big Rock Road and Downtown.  Just drive along Cherry Valley Road and you’ll see the frost all day long.  However, Big Rock Road on the south side is sunny.

I used to drive to my day job along Kelly Road to Big Rock Road.  Especially in the winter months, I could almost always count on a change of weather at the junction of Kelly and Big Rock Roads.  I think it’s what you call a “convergent zone”.  Sometimes, I be driving in snow at home and when I reached Big Rock Road, there would be rain or just clouds.  Truly and unusual experience to see the weather change as I ‘crossed the line.”
