Alameda Theater Classic Movie Series, Winter 2015

 

Alameda Theater offers great current movies, movies for children and Friday talent shows.  But the best thing they offer are the Classic Movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Seeing classic films on the large screen is an awesome experience.  The winter series begins on January 27, 2015 and ends on April 15, 2015

 

You can purchase a package of eight classic movies for $40.00 or 4 classic movies for $25.00.  No expiration date.  There is also a Classic Snack Pack for $4.50 which includes vintage packaging, popcorn, drink and candy.

 

Here’s the lineup for this winter:

 

Fort Apache on Tuesday, January 27 and Wednesday, January 28  Fort Apache is a 1948 American Western film, the first of a trilogy directed by John Ford.  John Wayne stars in with Henry Fonda, Ward Bond, Shirley Temple, John Agar and Victor McLaglen.

Grease on Tuesday February 3 and Wednesday, February 4.  Grease is the delightful 1978 American musical romantic comedy starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, Jeff Conaway, Stockard Channing, Didi Cannon, Eve Arden, Sid Ceasar, Edd Byrnes and Frankie Avalon.

 

Elevator Gallows on Tuesday, February 10 and Wednesday, February 11.  Ascenseur pour l'échafaud is a 1958 French film noir directed by Louis Malle. It stars Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet as criminal lovers whose perfect crime begins to unravel when Ronet is trapped in an elevator.

 

A Streetcar Named Desire on Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18.  The film adaptation of Tennessee William’s Pulitzer Prize play stars Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden.

National Velvet on Tuesday, February 24 and Wednesday, February 25.  Starring Mickey Rooney, Elizabeth Taylor, Donald Crisp

National Velvet is the story of a twelve-year old girl, Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), who trains her horse for the Grand National steeplechase.

 

Paint Your Wagon on Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4  

Paint Your Wagon is a 1969 Western musical film starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, and Jean Seberg. The film was adapted by Paddy Chayefsky from the 1951 musical Paint Your Wagon by Lerner and Loewe. It is set in a mining camp in Gold Rush-era California and was directed by Joshua Logan.

Grapes of Wrath on Tuesday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 11

The Grapes of Wrath was adapted from the American realist novel written by John Steinbeck and published in 1939. The book won the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize was about the Depression and the Dust Bowl which forced many Oklahomans to move to California.  The film was directed by John Ford and starred Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine,

 

Doctor Zhivago on Tuesday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 19.  Dr Zhivago is an adaptation of Boris Pasternak’s sweeping novel about World War I and the Russian Revolution and stars Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Alec Guinness.

 

The Maltese Falcon on Tuesday, March 24 and Wednesday, March 25.   The Maltese Falcon, the 1929 detective novel by Dashiell Hammett was adapted into a movie directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr.  A true classic.

Sabrina on Tuesday, March 31 and Wednesday, April 1.  The story of a young woman raised on an estate where her father is a butler.  The young woman is shipped off to Paris to learn to cook and returns as a fashionable and lovely young woman. Sabrina is played by Audrey Hepburn and also stars Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and John Williams.  The film was directed by Billy Wilder.  

 

Guys and Dolls on Tuesday, April 7 and Wednesday, April 8  According to Wikipedia this 1955 musical starred Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. This is a lighthearted musical in which Marlon Brando looks so handsome and actually sings.

 

The classic movie series concludes the winter series with Bonnie & Clyde showing on Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15.  Bonnie and Clyde is a 1967 American biographical crime film directed by Arthur Penn and starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the title characters.
