Why Do Home Buyers Still Not Know Their Credit Scores?

It is not the time for a home buyer to find out their credit score when they apply for a mortgage.  In fact, it is upsetting and perplexing that with all the free avenues out there, home owners to be do not utilize the resources at hand to them.  If this is YOU well I need to suggest to you today that you find out how good your 'financial house' is in order or not today.  It makes no sense to wait another month to find out your credit score.  Understand that it will take you some time period to correct inaccuracies on your credit report or repair your credit so your score goes up.

Many of the top credit card companies now offer your credit score to you for free.  Have you checked that out?  If not, why not?  You need to know it since a lower credit score impacts so much of your borrowing and life including your insurance costs.  It does not impact your credit score OR lower it to find this information out by you!

Did you know that you are entitled to one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax).

You can order online from www.AnnualCreditReport.com, the only authorized website for free credit reports, or call 1-877-322-8228. You will need to provide your name, address, social security number, and date of birth to verify your identity.

As another disappointed home buying couple with merging families comes to me and finds out their credit has issues just when they want to buy a house.  They could have been ahead of the curve by checking on their credit months ago but waited because they wanted to buy now.  Having your financial house in order is a prerequisite to borrowing for a home.  Need help?  Call me at 401.529.7849 and I will give names of great RI lenders to work with you through your credit repair process.  Then we can discuss and look for the home you want.

Find out your credit score today and up your financial knowledge in life.  In RI real estate it is essential before the spring buying home market gets busy!

Ginny, you are right. This is a number that should be in-grained in their heads like their phone number.

Absolutely!  Waiting to find out about bad credit, right at the time good credit is needed, is not the way to go. Free credit reports that won't impact credit are out there and available to all.

IT's hard to believe Ginny that anyone does not know his or her credit score these days, and homebuyers in particular.  Free credit reports with credit cards give us easy access and it is a must know when looking to buy a home and understanding the financial implications.

Ginny, it is so easy to find one's credit scores and still not be expected to make a commitment.  Once they find the score, and anything less than 600  shows, that ls when they should seek the help of a financial professional such as a lender to get assistance in fixing the score

Good morning, Ginny Gorman people are foolish to NOT know their credit score, whether they are in the market or not... every person needs borrowing power and that score is most important....

You make a very good point Ginny, but people I think are afraid to take that step, or are turned off by some of the strings that are attached to some of the "free" offers of credit scores.  Some people don't want to share their SSN on the internet.  People do need to be educated.

Thanks for sharing.

Ginny: It really is perplexing that some consumers do not take the first step and find out their credit score before deciding they want to buy a home.

Ginny you have provided needed information in this blog.  Another avenue potential homebuyers have to find out their 3 credit scores quickly for free, as well as how much house they can purchase is by calling a Loan Originator and starting the pre-qualification process.

Good morning Ginny. I have attended a seminar put on by a local mortgage company that was designed for first time homebuyers. I learned an awful lot about mortgages.

Ginny... you are so right. It's absolutely astonishing in this day and age that someone doesn't regularly check their credit scores!
