Skamania Lodge - A Favorite Spot and Dog Friendly Too.
We're big fans of Skamania Lodge. It’s located in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area and is about a 30 minute drive from our home in Camas, Washington. Its close proximity makes it one of our favorite spots for a weekend away, a special occasion meal, or just an afternoon of relaxation.
The lodge is build in Pacific Northwest style which translates into a rugged sense of natural elegance in massive proportion. Soaring ceilings, plenty of glass, heavy beams, massive rock fireplaces, and accents of wood, Native American art and design, and an ode to wildlife mix perfectly in Skamania Lodge’s many rooms.
Skamania - Swift Waters
Most of the main rooms in the lodge face the Columbia River. Skamamia, a Chinook Indian word, means swift waters. Although, most would describe the vibe at Skamania Lodge as more laid back and relaxing, rather than fast moving. The name is likely in honor of the more than 79 waterfalls nearby, including the famous Multnomah Falls, which is the fifth highest in the US.
Overnight accommodations vary in price, we tend to prefer a River Fireside room for obvious reasons - a river view and the cozy romance of a gas fireplace! Although, the dog friendly rooms are all on the lower floor, in one wing, and a bit less luxurious.
Our favorite spot in the warm days of summer and early fall, is the lawn area in front of the lodge. Visitors sit in Adirondack chairs with a favorite beverage and soak up the amazing scenery. It’s a luxurious experience and a good spot to read, meditate, or converse with other friendly visitors. Unless we want an overnight in one of the River Fireside rooms, not a pet friendly room\, we bring along our white Golden Retriever, Mac. Our friends call him a “chick magnet,” although, he also attracts families with kids, and fellow dog lovers.
Here's McKinley ( aka Mac) chilling on one of our past trips. Note; my husband has kicked off his shoes and is in full-on relaxing mode.
While Skamania Lodge is a great spot for relaxing, and wining and dining, it’s also a great spot for recreation. “You’re in the Gorge, baby.” You can hike, bike, wind-surf, white water raft, fish, go horseback riding, take the zip line aerial trip around the lodge, or golf. Speaking of golf, the lodge has a challenging 18 hole, par 70 course and a full-service golf shop, cart rentals, and PGA pros to assist you with your game. The best part, this course is dog friendly, you don’t have to leave your fur buddy in the room while you enjoy a round or two.
Naturally, Skamania Lodge has an indoor pool, dry saunas, and an outdoor hot tub with a heck of a view! Spa facilities offer a variety of nourishing treatments to give you an amazing experience in a natural setting. One of the most popular treatments offered at the spa is a relaxing couples massage. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the lodge is offering a variety of Romance packages. We may just have to leave Mac with a pet-sitter this time around. Shhh, don't tell him.
