Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Events or How To Safely Dispose of Hazardous Household Waste In The Phoenix Metro Area

-See the HHW Event Schedule for the First Quarter of 2015 at the end of this post-

What is Household Hazardous Waste?

Any leftover household product that contains poisonous, explosive, flammable, corrosive, toxic  or reactive ingredients are considered household hazardous waste (HHW).

For example:

  • Electronic devices - TV’s of every type - computers, hand-held devices including phones.

  • Paints - of all kinds, latex, oil-based, spray cans, stains.

  • Leftover household cleaners - unless they are biodegradable.

  • Automotive Fluids & Oils - of all kinds except cooking oils.

  • Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs.

  • Batteries - everything from car batteries to flashlight batteries.

  • Pesticides, herbicides and insecticides.

  • Auto or light duty truck tires.

  • Pool/Spa chemicals.

Why can’t I just pour them down the drain, into storm sewers, put them in the trash or just dump them on the ground in an area that isn’t inhabited? Well, at the very least, improper disposal can irreparably pollute the environment including our groundwater and the air we breath.

At worst, corrosives if inhaled can cause lung damage and can destroy your drain pipes. Certain reactive chemicals can mix with each other leading to fires and even explosions.

The local government does this from time to time too. But they always collect most of these things at their transfer stations. Check your local government if you need to dispose of things when there's not an event like this.

Hi Nancy -- I think there are more people like David Shamansky who didn't realize(or still may be unaware) about the number of household items that can't be disposed of in the weekly disposal pick up.  Good localism post.

Good morning Nancy, what a wonder blog post full of very important information of hazardous items in our homes and how to dispose of them.

Our homes are full of very scary items we would normally not think of dangerous to us or our environment.
