Discarded Smoking Materials Cause Fires

Improperly discarded smoking materials are the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States.

If you must smoke, designate an area to smoke, use large non-tip ashtrays and soak cigarette butts and ashes before discarding. Never smoke in bed, when sleepy/impaired or on medication that makes you drowsy.

Roy, it's hard to believe that people still smoke, but many do. I was on a showing appointment yesterday and when I opened up the door, the tobacco smoke went straight to my nose and caused my eyes to tear. I showed anyways because my buyer had an open mind. The bed was not made and the house was a mess. All I kept thinking of was how flammable that whole place was if a cigarette was still burning and how dangerous it was to the people who lived behind the shared wall and probably, didn't even know.

Roy- there are so many tragic fires because of improperly discarded cigarettes as well as candles that are left burning.

Roy Kelley, great reminders.  By the way...I love the picture of the crotons in your post.  One of my favorite foliage plants.

Besides being dangerous, smoking is a filthy habit, and it's difficult to sell a home occupied by a smoker.

This is great advice, Roy. Often times it's so easy to take the steps to avoid a tragedy.

And exercise caution with discarded fireplace ashes. They can smoulder for days and should never be stored indoors.

When I see some flick a cigarette butt out their window at a traffic light I'm always tempted to get out, pick it up, and give it back to them saying, "I think you dropped something."

This is always such a big problem in Arizona, as we are so dry here that sometimes the smallest thing can start a huge fire.

I see people flicking their butts with cherries still on them and they truly can be a danger

We are having a severe thunderstorm on Maryland this evening. Be very careful if you must be out and about in bad weather.
