Eco-friendly is a GPS navigation system

I have lived in the Portland Metropolitan area all my life.  It could be told that I know my way around and that I even impress some folks with my knowledge of shortcuts.  But as it turns out, at times I get lost.  I get lost a lot.  I reach an unfamiliar neighborhood toward the end of a sunless day and every turn I make I get more and more turned around.

Now, I'm not necessarily a techno-phobe, but I had played with GPS navigation systems before and I found them more burdensome and frustrating than getting lost was and so I went for years printing out maps with step by step instructions to my appointments and comparable properties.

At the end of 2005 I bought a TomTom (this was prior to the super cute ‘Steve Steve' etc. commercials that came out).  How on earth did I ever do this job without one?  I must save a gallon+ of gas and reams of paper a week with this gadget.

I'm sure that there are other GPS systems out there that have similar attributes to the TomTom, but this is the one I know and love and so I'm going to rave about some of my favorite features for a moment.

  • Touch screen navigation - This is so easy while on the road.  You never have to take the TomTom out of it's charger cradle
  • Voice options - If I get tired of the guy from Australia telling me where to go, I can change to the English girl or change languages all together (it seems silly, but when you hear this person's voice more than anyone else's throughout the day, it is a nice option)
  • Long battery life - Although my model isn't designed to be a handheld, if I take a different car on inspections, I don't need the charger.  I have yet to loose a charge after having it on for hours.
  • 3-D View - This is what I felt was missing in other GPS systems that I had seen.  The voice commands in addition to the 3-D View of where you are and where you should be going is a perfect combination.
  • Customer Service - My poor TomTom took a nasty spill and the company replaced it with no questions asked.

Please note that I am not affiliated with TomTom in any way, I just simply found a product that I like....

Excellent Point! I don't have a Tom Tom because I'm blond, I have it to save gas.

Perfect! :-) Sara

Oh yes, and don't forget, if you take clients in your car with you, it really does make you seem a lot more savvy if you're not constantly pulling out a map or running into the nearest gas station for directions.

HHmm.. i would have never considered it. I'm starting to take my laptop and leech of people's unsecured wireless networks ;) eventually getting an aircard so i can pull comps in the field if i get a surprise at an inspection.  but, i like the idea of not having to fiddle with maps, prinouts, etc.  our area isn't rural, so got appraisals?hotspots and google-maps are a click away, for the most part. but thanks for the tip.. i will look into it when things pick up. how much does it cost?? aahh, i guess i have to actually click on the link to see. i'm not lazy, but comforatable! :)

Hey Nick -

I have an older model... the GO 300 which was about $500, but there is at least one newer model, so I'm sure the price has dropped considerably -

OK! I have been having this discussion with my son who is a real estate navigator par excellence. He insists that a GPS system is THE way to go. I insist that it is much more fun to sit down with my client-investors before we start out and take a look at the map together. It's interactive. It's a pure bonding experience, I tell him. HA! he says.

(You have to remember, we are Land Specialists, so we cover a very large territory. )

Over the years, I have found that my clients get a real kick our of the whole map deal. I hand it over to them with highlights at the end of the tour....they will tell me years later how much FUN they had.  PS...I might hide a Tom-Tom somewhere in my car... (I'm smiling)

JaneAnne, that's great that you can make an ice-breaker out of it!  I never thought of it that way as I don't have others in the car to have a good time getting lost with :-)

Hey Meg -

That's great!  We should compare notes with TomTom and Garmin sometime - Do you have one that will have addresses pop up on the display as you go by the house?  That's the one thing I sacrificed with mine, but a co-worker has that option and it kicks booty on those rural appraisals.
