A few weeks ago while food shopping for a party I pulled my cart over in the soda aisle to check out my shopping list.
As I was doing so, someone said “Hi Mrs. Altieri!" I looked up and it was a one of the boys who was in my son’s high school car pool who I had not seen or talked to in over two years.
What a pleasant surprise to be acknowledged by a young man (now 19) instead of ME acknowledging HIM first.
We had about a 5-minute conversation about his college and about my son, who is a year ahead of him.
After that I thought to myself, I have to message his father on Facebook and tell him how impressed I was that his son was so friendly, polite and respectful. I LOVE to compliment, but this one just fell through the cracks as I was so busy and then … I just forgot.
Today, I ran into his father who I had not seen in a few years in the same store. I told him about running into his son and all I can say is that he beamed with pride and thanked me for the compliment.
I am sure I made his day and more than that, offered him validation that he has raised a truly wonderful son with exemplary manners!
Moral of the story? Give compliments no matter how small or insignificant you think they may be. It really does mean SO much to the recipient and YOU might just make someone’s day! It’s a win-win for all involved.
“I can live for two months on a good compliment.”
