I don't get this... Would you turn down free advertising?

Right now I'm working on articles for a full color glossy magazine that one of my clients will distribute to homeowners via his 40+ agents in the field. It will center around remodeling projects that add the most value, staging, inexpensive fix-ups, and tips on what buyers are looking for today.

There's plenty of material out there on the web, but I wanted to know what homeowners/buyers in his particular part of the country were going for today, so I tried reaching out to remodeling contractors.

Wjy?I Googled contractors in his city and started down the list. Receptionists told me I needed to speak with their marketing department, so they transferred me... to voice mailboxes. I left messages explaining the situation and told them I was looking for tips and trends, and that whatever they gave me would be accompanied by their byline, web address, etc.

I offered to send details in an email, but they said no - they didn't give out email addresses.

I called five different companies, and guess how many returned the call... ZERO.

In my experience, free advertising is the very best kind. When you're mentioned in an article it's like an endorsement rather than a paid ad.

Why on earth would anyone turn it down?

Maybe those companies have too many clients and more business than they can handle. Maybe they were unwilling to make a long distance call. Maybe they thought I wouldn't quote them accurately. Maybe they thought I was posing as a writer but really was a competitor trying to learn their secrets.

There must be some reason that all these people made me feel like a beggar when I was attempting to give them a gift.

Eren Millam That's true - every contact is a possible client. Maybe they disregarded me as such since I had an out of area phone number.

I would LOVE Free advertising...But there are so many people offering FREE videos to teach you how to find 2 Listings a day, Free Blueprint for 2015 Real Estate Marketing Plans To Become A Listing Machine and on and on...It is sometimes difficult to weed out the truly FREE from the scammers...

Lindsay Reagan,PA Yes, they advertise free information, but when you get there, only half the sentence is there...and you need to buy in for the rest.

I don't mind paying for information, but I want to know the cost before I explore further. I fthey say "free" then it needs to be free.

Marte Cliff  I agree...it is very annoying.  I wish they would be upfront and not make us "work" so hard to get the pricing!

OMG! They are short sighted!

Best of luck for your project. Maybe check with the Chamber of Commerce for recommendations and names of people to speak with.

I think most of the time, it is the "too good to be true" thought.  However, with all the scams going around, they could also easily feel they are being scammed, so they just brush it off.  Others just don't want to be bothered or are too busy, so I think it may be a combination of things.

William Buddy Scott You're probably right - a combination of things, or different reasons for different companies.

Jeffrey Masich You just made me think of something my husband always says: "There's no such thing as a free puppy." (He said the same thing when I took in a "free" horse.)

I think part of the problem is we are all on "overload" when it comes to marketer's calling efforts.  I usually get several unsolicited calls per day and I'll bet most of the contractors didn't even listen to the complete message.  Unfortunately, the value of your call was most likely missed.

Marte - I'll tell you this kind of gives me an idea to put something like this together locally but I will tell you that when I was doing a monthly newsletter that was going to over 200 homeowners no one would answer my calls either!

Without questions there is a lot of distrust in the world and rightfully so many times. If you called me I cannot honestly say what the response would be either. I guess it may be the modd I was in and how busy I was and while that is not a great reply its honest and accurate.

Regardless I beleive "if they had known" all would have loved it but obviously NONE of them trusted it

Sounds like you dealt with a lot of gatekeepers and not decision makers.

I find that it's easier to meet movers and shakers at networking events, personal notes, LinkedIn notes, etc. to get the info I need.

Norma Toering In each case they said they were transferring me to their marketing department or their marketing director. The company owner likely never even heard about it.

Susan Jacobsen Doing it locally would probably be easier than my doing it from 1,300 miles away. Call someone you know and have them call someone they know, etc.

David Shamansky I've always been a fan of honest and accurate!

Tamir Ness Since I'm not there, networking wouldn't work, but you're right - I should have looked for contacts on LinkedIn. I didn't think of that at all.

Even in Real Estate there are agents that ignore phone calls and do not get back to people, hence my business model is to return calls.

Christine Donovan Yes, or else they didn't bother to listen at all when it was an out of state number.

Gene Riemenschneider I'd say that's a good business model.
