Ice castles or the real thing in the White Mountains of NH

These Man Made ice castles seem to be all the rage for travelers to view. They are a hit attraction in the town of Lincoln New Hampshire. There is somewhat of a captured audience when it comes to ski families looking to provide another venue for their kids to enjoy. When the ice is lit at night it really is a spectacular sight.

If you have a half an hour and time to kill before dinner... this is a great stop.

under the ice

Very "COOL" place and when it's lit up at night...it's magical. tickets range from $6-$13 depending on the day of the week. pre-ticketing on-line will save a few bucks and a long wait. icecastles.com

Flume Gorge ice

This is my idea of an ice castle...it's also in Lincoln NH...and it is part of the state park system and free to walk in to during the winter months. The Flume Gorge.

flume gorge ice climber

This wall of ice is not for a 3 year old clutching a mickey mouse flash light....not at all!!

flume gorge ice and ropes

I don't recommend you wonder around here after dark.

flume summer

There is a fee if you visit the flume gorge in the summer...but they offer a shuttle bus in most of the way and the state installs and maintains board walks with railings through the Gorge. Personally I prefer to hike in during the winter...and with a real estate office 5 minutes away, I often find myself there mid-week - with the place completely to myself.

fall flume

In the Fall or after a big rain the Flume is also just Magical.

A road trip to Lincoln NH - is a 2 hour drive from Boston...and there are all kinds of attractions from Zip lines, a water park, a Trained Bear show...skiing of course, but there are year round activities for all ages, and that is truly the drawing card for the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Steve, Nothing like that around here!  As close as I'll get is the White Mountains commemorative quarter I got in my change today.

I had no idea there were ice castles.  What great photos.  I hope I get a chance to see these ice castles in person.

Bill & Tammy... honestly I would visit these places where I had an office here or not...but it is a bonus to call this town my home turf.

Liz & Bill... I'm afraid not many visit from across the country unless there is a first in the nation primary heading our way.

In the interest of not taking sides on the debate (As I would rather be in the woods than a man-made structure) I will add this photo from inside the ice castles... trust me if you have small children or aren't physically able to hike a distance ...this is really a nice treat.
