Turn it around! What if it were your home?

Turn it around!  What if it were your home? The problem continues, and I have had to start warning homeowners who are thinking about selling not only to put away their valuables and their prescriptions, but also to close their blinds, make sure all doors and windows are locked, and that they may have people they don't know wandering around their property without making an appointment.

Are you one of those buyers who believes that if there is a "for sale" sign in the yard that it means you can wander around the property without an appointment?  They want to sell, don't they?  You just wanted to see if it was something worth calling the Realtor for! Or maybe, you had always wanted to see that property, and you didn't want to be bothered by a Realtor.  Or maybe it looked vacant so what is the harm?

Turn that around.  What if this were your property and you still lived there?  How would you feel if someone you didn't know was wandering around your yard and peeking in your windows while you weren't home?  How would you feel if that were happening when you were trying to enjoy an evening with your spouse, or kids, or grandkids? "Oh, I wouldn't mind," you say. "I want to sell my house, so let them look."

Ok, wait, maybe it isn't a real buyer! Maybe it is someone who sees it as an opportunity to take a look at your stuff, or your kids, or your grandkids, or your spouse . . .

Turn that around. Maybe you have moved out and the property is vacant. Now you really don't care! Sell it, let them look.  Oh, but wait!   Your windows are just high enough that no one can see in without climbing on something -- and you have left a patio table and chairs out to show how great the outdoor entertaining area can be! Those chairs were meant to be sat in, not stood on, but that potential buyer really doesn't want to make an appointment if they don't like the living room . . . And now they are injured . . . on your property . . . and then there are lawyers.  What if they simply step into a window well?

The long and short of it is, when you Turn it around, and it is Your Home, it looks a little different. There are so many options for seeing the inside of any home.  The internet has given us lots of places to put pictures and descriptions.  If it is that intriguing on the internet that you simply have to see inside, call an agent and make an appointment.  Turn it around! What if it were your home?

Great post Suzie! A great topic of conversation, especially in a buyers consultation to give them the showing guidelines:)

Thank you, Vera. I have sellers who don't want to put their homes on the market because they have watched uninvited guests wandering around properties without appointments.
