Hidden Hazards of Remodeling an Older Home

Recently another Realtor and I were considering purchasing an older home. This had many concerns one of which was possible asbestos. Asbestos is a fiberous silicate mineral that can be inhaled if the fibers are disturbed. Inhaled fibers increase the risk of lung cancer. In the past, asbestos was used in flooring, roofing, insulation, and siding. If a home has asbestos a professional can seal or remove it. Sealing is the least expensive. The area should not be scraped sanded or drilled into. If possible cover or seal the area such as putting new flooring over the existing flooring rather than disturb it. Does anyone have some experience in this area? More information at www.epa.gov/asbestospubs/ashome.html
