Mast General Store - in business since 1883.
The first Mast General store was opened in 1883 in Valle Crucis, NC. Folks used to play bottle cap checkers next to the pot-bellied stove. It has now grown to 9 locations throughout the south. Hendersonville, NC is lucky to have this fantastic store. It is like walking back in time. You see all the old mercantile items, lye soap, jellies, jams and cast iron skillets. Then venture on to the toys - old fashioned toys, with no batteries allowed. These are a favorite of my kids - perfect stocking stuffers. Old marbles, airplanes, puzzles, and rubber band guns are just a few of the items in the toy dept. Then you won't believe the candies. Old fashioned candies, like Teaberry gum, Necco wafers, mary janes, zagnuts and bottle caps. Then on to the camping, hiking and outdoor wear. I love the Life is Good T-Shirts, the Columbia jackets and the Azalea footwear.
The Mast Store on Main Street in Hendersonville was built in 1905. It has housed a variety of past retailers including the Maxwell Fancy Grocery Store, Freeze Drug Store, Potts 5¢ & 10¢, and a ladies' dress shop. Other occupants included The Woodsmen of the World, a benevolent secret society which held its meetings in the store in the 1920s.
The following description is from their website. www.mastgeneralstore.com
Today, all of Mast Store's departments are showcased in a beautifully restored building complete with an ornate pressed-tin ceiling, oiled floors, and a "grand staircase" leading to the second floor. Mercantile features oil lamps by Lamplight Farms, goat's milk soap, and cast iron cookware from Lodge; fashion includes brand names like Woolrich, Northern Isles, Miss Erika, and Flyshacker Flannels; the outdoor and shoe department features items from Royal Robbins, Mountain Hardwear, MSR, Columbia, Patagonia, Asolo, and Clarks. You'll also find barrels full of your favorite candies - from orange slices to wax bottles and extra large jaw breakers to Mary Janes - available to mix and match by the pound.
