Dependable Pansies

We have been anxiously awaiting more sunshine and warmth so that we can get outside and plant some new things!  Fortunately, the pansies and Johnny-Jump-Ups we planted last fall can always be counted on to come back stronger than ever the following spring.  It never ceases to amaze me when I see the pansies covered with ice in the winter, only to see them growing and bushing out and looking beautiful when spring comes again.  For something that looks so fragile, they are truly one of the hardiest plants imaginable!

We usually have to pull out huge clumps of pansies to replace them with something more heat tolerant when the weather gets warmer.  We put this off as long as possible, as the plants become really spectacular, but we have to pull them in time to be able to acquire suitable replacement plants from the garden centers while they still have plenty of stock.  Usually we have one or two wheelbarrowfulls brimming to the top with pansies.  I always hate to see them go, but know we will always plant more of these reliable and beautiful plants come fall.

I put some pansies in pots this weekend.  It feels so nice to look out and see color on the deck!!  Thank God for the pansies, they are welcome this time of year!!

Yes Patrice, it does make me feel like spring even on gloomy rainy days like the one we have had today in Oklahoma City!  Enjoy your pots!

My mom lives in Tulsa, and has beautiful pansies, it's too hot here, they just don't do well.

Cindy,

Our pansies do great until it starts to get a little hot.  Then they will get leggy and blooms will diminish.  We always pull them before then and replace them with some hot weather annuals like petunias.  We replant pansies in the fall and they look beautiful then and come back like gang busters in the spring when they are really spectacular.

The pansies are one of my very favorites.  It would be wonderful to be able to enjoy them in the hot weather too, but we will take them when we can!  In Houston, I am guessing you are so much farther south, that even your springs are too hot?
