Driving in Fog Safety Tips

Fog can be thought of as a cloud at ground level. It forms when the temperature drops to the dew point (the temperature at which air is saturated), and invisible water vapor in the air condenses to form suspended water droplets. Fog can reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions. If you can't postpone your trip until dense fog lifts -- usually by late morning or the afternoon -- follow these tips:

* Drive with lights on low beam. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more.

* Reduce your speed -- and watch your speedometer. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding.

* Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hear better.

* Use wipers and defrosters as necessary for maximum visibility.

* Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide.

* Be patient. Do not pass lines of traffic.

* Do not stop on a freeway or heavily traveled road. If your car stalls or becomes disabled, turn your vehicle's lights off, and take your foot off of the brake pedal. People tend to follow tail lights when driving in fog. Move away from the vehicle to avoid injury.

Good Morning Roy: Very precious safety tips as driving in fog is dangerous and it requires extra caution more than driving on a normal day.

Good morning Roy and Dolores.  The Albuquerque area doesn't have enough moisture for fog but when we drive across country we do run into it.  We normally stay in our hotel until the thick stuff lifts enough to drive safely.

Great advice, Roy!  Low beams, open window and don't speed and, of course, don't pass.   All these tips will help keep you safe.  Great job!

These are the driving conditions that worry me the most. A car can come out of nowhere and you will not have enough time to react. Great post.

Roy, We have had several recent mornings which had heavy fog conditions. Even this morning with both rain and light fog made it difficult to see. These are all excellent tips and I am happy you posted this.

These are great tips Roy Kelley and believe it or not we could have used them Super Bowl week, there were two mornings when we had heavy fog in my neighborhood.

Roy, great tips about driving in foggy conditions.  There is a stretch of I-75 in southern Georgia that has horrific conditions.  We drove right into it and could hear  cars running into each other, but you couldn't see anything.  It was very scary even though we pulled off the road onto the shoulder.

Thank you for these tips!   I would have never thought to wind down the window a little so I could hear, since with the fog I can't see!  Thank you!

Those are excellent trips for driving in hazardous foggy conditions, Roy!  We often get fog here in the Sacramento Valley.  And, it is frightening when folks get out on the freeway, and put pedal to the metal, as if it is a regular day!

Glad that Debbie reposted this one Roy.  Honestly, fog is really difficult to drive in but using the low beams really helps and going slowly of course, if you have to drive at all! Sometimes you just can't help it and fog can descend without a warning!
