San Diego Air and Space Museum
San Diego Air and Space Museum
The building that currently houses the Air and Space museum is the third building to house this museum. The Air and Space museum first opened in 1963 in the food and beverage building constructed for the 1915 Panama California Exposition. Being two small within 2 short years to house it's growing collections, it was then moved to the larger Electrical Building in Balboa Park.
In 1976, that building was destroyed by fire and many of the rare collections were destroyed along with it. A number of the larger one of a kind planes were also destroyed in that fire including a replica of the Spirit of St Louis.
The museum was then re-opened in the Ford Building that was constructed for the California Pacific Exposition in 1935. The collection though much smaller was in a building large enough for it to grow. And it has grown continuously to even include a new reproduction of the Spirit of St Louis.
The San Diego Air and Space Museum became affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute in 2005 and is one of two museums in San Diego with that distinction.
In my photo above, the two planes on display out in front of the building are the Lockheed A-12 and Convair Sea Dart. This museum is now considered one of the finest of it's kind in the US. It is a must see on your next visit to San Diego's World Class Balboa Park.
The Centennial Celebration 1915-2015 is a year long celebration with many events and special displays throughout the entire year.
