While the biggest institutional landlords, led by Invitation Homes and American Homes 4 Rent (AMH), have been more visible in gobbling up properties in the wake of the U.S. foreclosure crisis, they own fewer than 500,000 homes, compared with the more than 14 million owned by smaller investors, according to the report.
