Kelly Taylor, www.LakewoodRanchKelly.com, 941-706-5813, 5670kelly@gmail.comLakewood Ranch Town Hall has decided to apply for a targeted harvest permit through the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission to deal with the issue of nuisance gators. If it's approved the permit will allow the community districts to
directly contact wildlife trappers to remove the reptiles. The current protocol is that FWC would receive a complaint from a homeowner or resident, they contact and dispatch the trapper and then inform Town Hall of the need to enter the community.

With the new permit, operations staff would be able to call wildlife trappers directly, allowing them to control which trappers access our neighborhoods. In this way the operational staff would be able to build professional relationships they trust hopefully cutting down on the poaching of alligators. The staff at Town Hall will continue to approve the removal of gators at the residents request and to educate all residents to the fact that trapped alligators are not relocated, they are all killed once picked up.

Spotting an alligator floating in a pond is a fairly common sight here in Lakewood Ranch.
Alligators are an important part of living in Florida and play a vital role in the ecology of our state’s wetlands. They are predators and help keep other aquatic animal populations in a healthy balance. For those new to Florida, it's safe to assume that any body of water will have an alligator of some size living in it. The normal diet of an adult gator is fish, snakes and turtles along with small animals and birds. In a perfect world they are a lot more afraid of us than we are of them. The problem develops when people decide to feed them which is against state law. Once an animal has lost the natural fear of humans that animal becomes a possible threat so leave all alligators alone. State law prohibits killing, harassing or possessing them and even small alligators can result in injury. To report a nuisance alligator please call Lakewood Ranch Town Hall at 941-907-0202.
