An evening with Patti Smith, this is clearly ones of those occasional Local event that some people would brush off. Well she will be at The Theater at the Ace Hotel 929 South Broadway, Downtown Los Angeles, CA 90015. The performance is at 8:30pm tomorrow evening. Tickets are still available at $42.50 so you might ask who is Patti Smith?
Many do not know of her, she has written a book called ‘Just Kids’, the book made the New York Times Bestseller’s List and she is the winner of the National Book Award.

In 1967, she left Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and moved to New York City. She met photographer Robert Mapplethorpe there while working at a book store with a friend, poet Janet Hamill. She and Mapplethorpe had an intense romantic relationship, which was tumultuous as the pair struggled with times of poverty, and Mapplethorpe with his own sexuality. Smith considers Mapplethorpe to be one of the most important people in her life, and in her book Just Kids refers to him as "the artist of my life". Mapplethorpe's photographs of her became the covers for the Patti Smith Group LPs, and they remained friends until Mapplethorpe's death in 1989.In 1969 she went to Paris with her sister and started busking and doing performance art.[7] When Smith returned to New York City, she lived in the Hotel Chelsea with Mapplethorpe; they frequented Max's Kansas City and CBGB
OK I am sure you know who Robert Mapplethorpe is/was…very controversial photographer, I had no idea the connection between him and Patti Smith. More so very few people would be aware that Pope Francis greeted Smith, among other officials, visitors, and faithful, in St. Peter's Square on 11 April 2013.Although Smith maintains she is not Catholic, but that she followed the Conclave after Benedict XVI´s resignation. This I find fascinating, controversy surrounds this American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
Called the "punk poet laureate", Smith fused rock and poetry in her work. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written by Bruce Springsteen. Clearly there is a great deal of mystery with Patti Smith. More so that she is writing her second book and performing at the same time. She is also getting recognized and awarded by various colleges.
Just to be clear I did not know of her outside of a couple Headlines in the past thirty some years. Diane wanted to meet her and have her sign her book. Which we did at the Los Angeles Festival of Books a couple years ago. So it got my attention that she will be in Los Angeles tomorrow evening. Clearly Diane would love to go, but it is too short of a notice for us even though there are still tickets available.
