I have 2 Brother MFC8860DN printers and I ordered 2 additional trays so I could pull legal and letter size when I print loan documents.

The cost of legal paper has sky rocket in the last couple of months and I am wondering if other loan signers are considering buying a dual tray printer or a 2nd tray for a printer they already have?

In Riverside CA at Sam's Club the difference between legal and letter is $15.66.

I have always printed the Borrowers Copy Econo mode  and I am wondering if this truly saves much toner?

I can't see a difference between the copy to sign and the econo mode setting on the docs; it might be a little bit lighter but it looks pretty much the same to me.

What do you think?

I print one set on my printer an go to Staples to make the borrower's copy.  This way I control my costs.  I'm usually paying less than $6.00 for the copy documents.  I charge client's $0.35 per page for each document printed.  This rate covers my time, printing and ink.

I'm know for being expensive for printing edocs, but some title companies don't mind when I explain the cost model.

Many notaries take assignments and print docs for way above their out of pocket to get assignments.  That makes absolutely no sense. I wish more notaries had the guts to say no to low priced assignments from signing services and understood how easy it is to build their own disciples who allow them to price services to be profitable.

All of my printing equipment is HP old and roughed!  I expect I will be feeling the paper punch shortly!

With each loan package avering 100 pages you get $70 to printing docs?  Maybe I need you to negotiate for me.  It's wonderful that you get that amount.

I won't accept e-doc assignments from signing services for less than $125 anymore (2 copies-first only).  I won't let them "low ball" me.  No sireeee!  If they want to go on to the next notary who'll do it for less, it's fine.  I have lots of other business from the non-loan doc signing notarizations I do.

NAN ~ I totally agree with you about notaries working for less than they're worth.  They certainly should ask for more.  Signing companies are paying what they were paying 5 years ago.  It's ridiculous.  Price of gas, paper, toner, etc. going up... uhhh I think it's called "inflation."  I hear gas may go up to $4.50 per gallon here soon.

Also, not a bad idea about making borrower's copies at a Staples, but will signing services actually agree to pay the extra $0.35 per page?

We all know e-docs take a lot of extra time, energy and effort.  In my opinion, it's just not worth going out of my way to do e-docs for less than $125 anymore.

I have an HP 2430tn and I do see a difference when I print on econo-mode.  I tried printing the borrower's copy on econo but sometimes you need to switch out a page or two when the borrower messes up their date, signs in the wrong place, etc.  So then I had an econo-printed doc in the package.  So now I just print everything the same, but I make sure my settings are at 600 DPI.

My printer came with dual trays so I have been using letter/legal for a while.  I love that it automatically chooses which size to print on!

What is the advantage of printing at 600 DPI?

Hi

I have a brother HL5240 with dual tray.  I love it.  I would never go back to any other type of printer but a dual tray.

I got my printer for 99.00 at Staples on sale and then went to Buy.com and got the other tray for 125.00.  Awesome.

I also go through the www.ebates.com ( you get back 16% cash back on just 123inkjets.com purchases.  They send me a check every three months with all my paper and ink purchases) and purchase print cartridges at 123 inkjets.com and get the remanufactured ones for $38.95 with free shipping.

Letter and Legal paper I get at Costco or Sam's Club. 25.00 for letter and 35.00 for Legal.  Office Depot and Staples have had sales on their paper.  They are also part of the www.ebates.com cash back program.

Margaret ~ The printer you mention isn't a laserjet printer right?

I have two printers (both laser jets), but single tray.  One is an older HP which I will need to replace soon.  I just bought a new "all-in-one Samsung SCX-4521F which I really like for backup, faxing, scanning and copying, but it looks like I'm going to have to break down and buy a dual paper tray printer to replace my old HP.

Linda ~ Is your HP 2430tn new?

I think we are all going to have to purchase a dual tray printer in the future  because of paper cost.  I use 2 Brother laser MFC 8860 DN printers.

I don't think this purchase will get us a loan signing assignment, but, will save us paper costs.

With any decent laser printer, you can always print loan docs in the lowest-quality mode (draft, econo, whatever it's called with your particular printer & software).  You'll see little or no difference compared to higher-quality print modes.  It's just black ink on white paper, so it will print clearly even at the cheapest settings.  How much less ink does it use, and how much $ do you save?  Who knows?  But why spend any more to get effectively the same result?  (If you do notice a significant reduction in print quality at the lowest setting, make sure it's not your printer acting up, or just the ink running low.)

I set the printer settings at 300 dpi to save on toner.  My econo mode is okay for the borrower(s) copies but it is too light for most orginial docs.

The reason I say "most docs" is I think it depends on the scanning that is done. Some email docs look fine with econo mode and others look too light .

This is true.  When they send you poor-quality e-docs, you may have to bump up your print settings just to get a marginally-acceptable result.  Of course it's their bad, but yes, you're expected to make the necessary adjustments (which sometimes requires more miracle than manipulation).

I have been using two printers a Brother all in one and a Samsung ML 2510 Laser single tray.  What a PAIN to switch between printers or match up the paper from the .tif files to printer from one printer!!! I was in Best Buy today inquiring about a dual tray laser printer. We found one online a Brother HL-5250 DNT for $299.00. I would love to find one cheaper. I had never thought about changing to econo/draft. Great idea!!

Keep the comments coming. I appreciate the networking!!

Thanks

All,

You might want to try a different approach to save money on ink.

I recently start using PretonSaver Home - software solution that reduce ink and toner consumption by up to 50%. And the good part, you get great print quality - way better then economode. It works will all printers, all brands, easy to use.

Try it. You can download it at http://www.halftheink.com
