My Typical Realtor Day in 2015 - a Reprise
Whether I’m asked or not I can tell that people have no idea what a Realtor® does. In fact, for me, I’m guessing that the entire conversation begins with a lack of understanding relative to why my title is “Realtor®” in the first place. That is a discussion – again – for another time so instead I’ll try to de-mystify the daily grind for me and for pretty much all of my colleagues.
6:30A Check overnight emails
6:35A Confirm schedule
6:40A Stretch
7:00A Run 5 miles in preparation for my current race – an 8K in Tampa, FL at the end of the month
8:30A While cooling down, check emails and phone messages
8:45A Hear my phone ringing while showering and reach out and grab it to ask can I call back
9:00A While drying my hair, respond quickly to a text alert from a new customer about a listing
9:30A Return my phone call to the ‘shower’ person and make appointment for late afternoon
9:50A Dress and either wolf down juice and cereal or usually put juice in a to-go cup and cheerios in a plastic container
10:00A Get in car and make sure that blue tooth is activated
10:05A Call to confirm that the inspector will be at a property that morning
10:15A Respond to a call from a buyers’ agent about inspection items
10:35A Contact an attorney regarding a closing 5 days hence
11:00A Respond to a sellers’ agent as to why we are now 4 days past closing date
11:30A Call the above referenced lender to find out more information about where the closing packet is
11:00A Telephone a long standing client regarding properties to purchase at upcoming foreclosure sale
11:30A Telephone new client regarding listing appointment this afternoon
12:00P Preview 4 homes for out of town client coming in this weekend
1:35P FaceTime above client at last home since after a phone call to the listing agent there might be a contract coming in
2:00P Open up personal website and look up the property the new customer is asking about
2:30P Complete comparable property research and prepare listing agreement for listing appointment
3:00P Sign out lockbox (we don’t do signs in our area so no sign goes with me to the listing)
3:10P Respond to email from closing coordinator regarding closing documents from yesterday’s closing
3:30P Respond to text from a listing client regarding why there is no contract yet
4:15P Make listing presentation
5:40P Email listing coordinator and set up photographer for now new listing
6:00P Call husband and say yes, I will be home but we’re having cheese, crackers & wine for dinner
6:15P Telephone call from new listing with items that will not convey
7:00P Home!
7:05P Dinner and watch news
8:00P Telephone call from another out of town client (2 hour time difference) confirming appointment for the weekend and asking to add another property
8:30P Check emails and new MLS listings
9:00P Write a blog post for Active Rain
9:30P Watch mindless television
11:00P Read a chapter of a book I’ve started
11:30P BED
Then - Start again
(Yes I do realize that I haven't outlined anytime for lunch - this too is sometimes a possibiity but also sometimes the probability is a Lean Cuisine™ at my desk while answering calls or emails)
The days basically tend to run together for Realtors® and depending on what day of the week it is for me personally, on Wednesdays there are broker tours on Hilton Head Island and I stay up to date with what properties come on the market either just for my own information or for the many customers/clients for whom I’m watching properties.
I LOVE MY JOB – whether it’s a difficult day of negotiating with another Realtor®, clarifying a point relative to a contract with an attorney, trying to figure out how in the world a buyer could think that a light bulb falls within the need for a seller to ‘repair’, etc. It’s all in the details and that’s what a Realtor’s® job is all about. Keeping the wheels on the rails – sometimes we succeed and sometimes we don’t but it’s
All in the day of the life of a Realtor®!
