The Municipality of East Hants is located approx 30 kilometeres out the 102 and the 101 highways from Nova Scotia's capital city of Halifax. Halifax is the educational and commercial centre of Canada's East Coast with the Canadian Military's largest naval base. With the recent awarding of Canada's largest ship building contract to Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax the city and surrounding area will grow and prosper over the coming years.
This insures the continued growth and urban sprawl into the nieghbouring municipality of East Hants. With reasonable taxes and local amenities like modern schools, shopping and low crime East Hants is becoming a favoured location for Halifax's growing work force.
The village of Elmsdale is fast becoming East Hant's commercial centre with the recent announcement of Canadian Tire opening up in the Elmsdale Mall. The Municipal offices are located in a new Multi million dollar municipal building in the Elmsdale business park and serviced commercial/industrial lots are available to meet the needs of a growing residential population. Elmsdale is located just 10 minutes from the Halifax International or Stanfield Airport. This makes the village a favoured home for many airport employees.
The recent announcement of expanding services in nearby Aero Tech Park and Pratt and Whittney's announcement of being awarded a contract to provide engine criticalhardware to the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) F135 engine system for the newLockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will secure existing jobs and create new jobs at their location in Aero Tech Park. In fact renovations and construction is now underway to upgrade existing facilities.
The Halifax Airport in itself is a major job creator,employer and local success.
According to the Skytrax World Airport Awards, the Halifax facility was named the eighth-best airport in North America and the fifth-best in the world for airports that service less than five million passengers.
It was also named the third-best regional airport in North America and the 58 overall out of 100 worldwide.
The Halifax airport was the only Canadian one in the category for regional North American airports.
All this bodes well for East Hants and that area along the 102 highway between the Airport and Truro. There are many couples that now live along the corridor while one works in towards Halifax and the other towards Truro. Truro is benifitting from this urban sprawl as well .
The Truro area is among the fastest-growing regions in Nova Scotia, according to the latest census report from Statistics Canada. Truro is the commercial centre and a town located in Colchester county which is adjacent to East Hants.
Colchester and Hants East includes both rural and urban areas. The "corridor" north of Halifax airport between Enfield and Truro has the fastest growing population in the province and is considered an "urban" area by Statistics Canada. Pratt & Whitney, Litton, lumber yards, schools and grocery stores are the main employers with many successful farms being strong economic contributers to local communities. Mount Uniacke is also a growing suburban community on the southern flank of this riding.
The rest of this Hants County riding is rural and includes Upper Rawdon, Gore and the Noel Shore where agriculture, forestry and tourism are important.
It also includes the First Nations community of Indian Brook. Outmigration and recruiting family doctors are big issues in the rural part of the riding where population is declining. By contrast, the Municipality of East Hants is challenged to deal with growing demand in the corridor area for better services in the areas of blood collection, diagnostic tests and mental health.
The new resource centre houses these services and a library.
The population in East Hants is 22,111 (2011 Census) and the median incme is $56,591 unemployment is running at about 7.5 per cent and the number of people who have some post-secondary training is above the provincial average.
The riding includes the Shubenacadie Wildlife park, Lawrence House in Maitland and the Uniacke House in Mount Uniacke.
East Hants encompasses 1,786.47 sq kilometers and 8,753 Dwellings.
