Skating on the Lakes is Prohibited!

Please warn your family members that it is not safe to walk on the ice covered lakes in Kentlands and Lakelands.  Do not try to rescue pets that have fallen through the ice. Call for assistance!

This following notice was distributed by the Kentlands Citizens Assembly.

The frozen lakes look inviting, but please do not attempt to play or skate on any lakes within Kentlands or Lakelands.  The ice could give way and you would fall through to freezing water!  If this were to happen, it could prove to be fatal before rescuers could reach the scene.  Talk to your children about the extreme danger of playing on the ice or on the rocks surrounding the lakes.

Yes, the ice looks stable and inviting but please remember that our lake systems double as a storm drainage network.  This means that the level of water under the ice may be lowering and it is never safe to walk out onto the lakes.  The water is constantly moving under the ice, further contributing to a perilous environment and an adult can lose motor skills within a minute of being in freezing water.

If you see anyone skating or playing on the lakes, please call the police non-emergency number at 301-279-8000 to report it.

The thought of someone falling through is terrifying! Less than a minute to loose your motor skills?  Very very dangerous! Thanks for putting out the warning!

Roy, we have a large pond and looks frozen, and like you state in this post everyone needs to be very careful around frozen water. We keep our dog away from the pond.  Great post to get the word out.

Excellent information for those thinking of walking, playing or skating on what appears to be frozen water.  Things are not always as they seem.

A great notice, I always wonder how safe it would be to skate on ice and would worry about hitting a weak spot and falling through.

Even though I have lived in places like Minnesota where people drive out on the ice to go ice fishing, it always makes me uneasy, and it's legal there.

Nobody is skating on the lakes in our area even though the temps have been below freezing for over a month. The 2 feet of snow on top of the ice is difficult to skate through

Great warning Roy, I have fallen through a few times and it happens very quickly with no time to react.

Fortunately the water was shallow where I fell through and I survived, but most do not.

Most of the communities here with a common pond have the same rules. We have had many vehicles going through the lake this winter as it has been cold lately, it was open water as of new years.

Roy, Great advice. We have had such a mild winter here there is not much ice to play on. We will need some snow.
