There are many factors that will go help in the decision when you purchase your next home. Of course, location plays a major factor in most sound real estate purchases. To help find out how "walkable" a neighborhood is, you can check out this nifty web site that will give your neighborhood a "score" based on the amenities near by.
My neighborhood in South Tempe scores a "decent" 66. At 70, a neighborhood is considered "very walkable" according to the guys at WalkScore.com Here is their break down..

90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car. 70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car. 50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.
25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.
0 - 25 = Driving Only: Virtually no neighborhood destinations within walking range. You can walk from your house to your car!

Most of our valley is pretty spread out and the thought of walking to conveniences isn't even a consideration. Take a look at this site, it is kind of fun.. In fact, give your house a try and let us know YOUR score! :-)

I love this concept!! WOW!! In this driving society it is great to see people going the other way and developing a lifestyle around the idea that the car can stay parked in the garage. I'm bringing this to my area. Thanks, Nick.

Brendon, great post.  Now I have to go and see what my neighborhood walk score is.

I guarantee you my neighborhood walk score is less than 10.  Living in a small town or in the country, many of us would have a 0, LOL.

Hi Greg.. I'm sure there are advantages to that as well. :-)

Doreen.. One great benefit of our business is that you CAN move if you want. :-) I have not written (on AR) about this before but I see that others have.

David.. They even have a "widget" you can use on your web site! You are right, tons of ways to market something like this.

Gita.. Take a look and let us know what you think. Thanks for stopping by!

I believe that walk score is cool, but nowadays more and more people drive cars.
Homes are often located in an area where some establishments are easier to get to by car than on foot. I've recently found a type of service on Fizber.  It is called Drive Score.
It shows a map of what establishments are in your neighborhood and calculates
a Drive Score based on the number of places within a convenient driving distance.

Hi Mishel.. Thanks for stopping by. A drive score could be useful to many people. But, with gas at four bucks a gallon, I would tend to believe people are interested in communities where they do not always "have" to drive for everything. Heck, maybe we can find a "public transportation" score as that has been a hot topic lately as well.

hhhmmm.. I think this was answered in the comment directly above your question.

In the first sentence of the post, I wrote: "There are many factors that will go help in the decision.." - Feel free to offer your clients their drive score. I bet some of them will like it.

Fantastic concept -- especially when the focus today is "Going Green".

I did try this on a few of my local neighborhoods and two received what I would consider a very accurate rating, but the other one seemed a bit low.  Overall, a great idea.

Thanks for sharing!

54 and I demand a recount. :) There a couple of things where my distance to a resource is too far. We just had a new book store open in town and there is a local restaurant that has Thursday movie nights. Does that count. Still not bad for a little town in the middle of the Pacific.

Andrew.. That really is a perfect fit for your niche. The condo buyers probably love that kind of info. Good luck with it!

Yep, I agree Nick.  BTW, It was a breeze to incorporate it into the listings on my website, (for those of you who can edit your own websites).  See the screenshot.

I love this idea. Unfortunately I ran a listing I have and it got a score of only 6. I live in the same neighborhood and there is quite a bit within walking distance. I also noticed another problem with it, maybe not the designers fault but the map is out of date. I am sure it is an issue with google maps, but the street my listing is on isn't even on the map, neither is my street. Infact, only two of the eight streets in my 10+ year old neighborhood are there! That being said, I really do love the idea. Maybe we could get something similar up for biking? That would be great!
