Wesleyan University is well know for their diversity in the area of performing arts. On Friday, February 27, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. area residents will have an opportunity to see the first Connecticut performance of Tari Aceh! (Celebrate Aceh!) At Wesleyan University In Middletown, CT.
Tari Aceh is a nine member female group from Aceh, Indonesia who are touring the U.S. for the first time. Their performances consist of dances from their rich history combined with singing of religious and folk Islamic songs.
The dancers are between the ages of 14-24 who study at the University of Syiah Kuala, located in Banda Aceh, which is the capital of the province of Aceh in the western Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The dances performed by Tari Aceh are dances which were originally performed by men, and not taught to women until the 20th Century. As a result it is still forbidden in some parts of Indonesia for these dances to be performed by women.
