As the population ages...there is a growing need for affordable senior housing. There are many older adult assisted and independent living centers, which costs thousands of dollars per month. What about the seniors who want to downsize from a home..but don't have a comfortable pension for income?
Last week I visited Brookside Senior Residences at Rockhill Greens. This small building features 37 one-bedroom ($485/month) and 9 two-bedroom ($575/month) apartments, for those 55 years old and up within the income guidelines ($29,081 for one; $35,520 for two persons). Each apartment has a full kitchen with appliances and is wheelchair accessible. The building does not allow smoking or pets, andh sa 46 unassigned parking spaces. There are some extras: a nice outdoor patio, a media room, exercise room and multi-purpose room.
Ella McDaniel is the onsite Property Manager. She used to work for the KCMO Housing Authority. "I love my residents! I have always enjoyed working with older adults. The average age here is 70, and most everyone is very active. The tenants are very friendly, getting to know each other and watching out for each other." Ella is busy decorating the public areas and forming relationshops with the nearby YMCA, ShareAFare, MealsOnWheels and other services.
Currently all of the apartments are rented, and there are 57 persons on the waiting list. The developers are planning for a phase two. I did not find a website for the residences; you can contact Ella at 816 361 0313 for more information.
