Do I Need to Remove My Religious Symbols?

Do I need to remove my religious symbolsWhen meeting with a seller and after touring their home we sat down to talk about the procedures of showing their home once it goes on the market. I mentioned some cosmetic items that should be done to make it look better and even discussed some simple staging tricks that would make it show its best.

The decor was simple and not overbearing. There were just a few family photos around and though many agents think these need to come down I did not see them as a problem. I explained that the buyers would look at their pictures and it may be better to take them down during the showing if that would bother them. Sometimes these things become distractions and the buyer can't focus on the house itself.

This is when the buyer brought up a religious item they had hanging on their living room wall. To me it was not a problem because I knew I could shoot my photography around it without focusing on the picture in question much like I do with baby names in nurseries. I realized that they were not of my faith and though we had done business before this was never a problem. My job is to sell houses and it does not matter which faith or religion my clients choose.

But it must have occurred to the seller that this could offend a buyer or cause them to not want to buy the house or they wouldn't have asked. I stumbled for an answer because though I was taken by surprise by their question, I could clearly see their point in asking. I don't personally think that way but a buyer may very well think that way.

Not knowing how to address this I just left it up them. If they were comfortable taking it down and felt like they should, I would support them. If they wanted it to stay up I would support them in that too. After leaving I wondered if I had done the right thing. What if there had been multiple religious symbols throughout the house would I as their agent be doing them a disservice in not asking them to remove them for showing purposes?

I agree Debb Janes it is about keeping the buyer focused on the house and not all the pretties and decor. So if it keep the attention of the buyer then it is best that the seller pack it away.

I always suggest to people to simplify. this may or may not include religious symbols. As long as it is simple and the room photographs well, its fine. If they have several religious items, I think that get's to be an issue- as it may subliminally be offensive to some. On another note- I had a buyer who loved the brass scripture next to a door so much- they asked if the seller would be willing to leave it- and they did. So, I go with common sense- and simplicity!

Love your story BethAnn. Many people do like to see blessings stated on plaques and framed on walls. It makes them feel peaceful and that the house has good vibes.

I think that for many people their religion is very important and as someone who represents them I feel it important to support them.I believe most buyers are interested in the house and not your religion....my 10 cenys worth.

If I were selling my own home I would not remove it.  It is up to the seller.

Well, it appears to have been said a hundred times and a few different ways, it is best to try to neutralize the home so that potential buyers can visualize themselves in it. However, ultimately this is up to the Seller and their comfort level.  Personally I look at these personal items much like a swimming pool, 1/3 of the potential buyers will like it, 1/3 won't care and the other 1/3 will not get past it and buy something else.

I think most of us have seen a few pictures and gave it the "Oh my God"  I'm glad I have never lost a sale yet because of a religious symbol. I worry more about people that like to open cabinet drawers.... Especially in bedrooms

We are very patriotic with a flag on our coat lapels and my Crucifix is always around my neck no matter if work or leisure here in Myrtle Beach, it is all in the eye of the beholder. I think in today's day and age it is appropriate. We thank a higher power everyday for what we have.

Peg and Jerry McGrory/SRES/ABR 843-222-1858 since 1989  I commend you for sticking by your practice and proudly wearing it. This topic has many viewpoints when it comes to a house and seller trying to sell. As many said it can be distracting if there is too much.

Had never thought about it before, and have shown homes with different religous symbols. To the best of my knowledge , it never was a reason for or against an offer on them..

I think it depends on if the seller is still living in the home.  If they aren't, then it is take them all down and get rid of all photos.  If they are living in the home, the home is still their home, but suggest they tone it down a bit.  I had one potential client who was still going to be living in the home and when I suggested that she take down some personal photos and some religious things, she threw me out.  I do think that photos of nudity must be taken down, as some potential buyers might have children with them.

You were just doing what you thought was right William Buddy Scott and lost the listing. Oh well it happens.

I will be careful and try not to offend but you never kow how touchy a seller or buyer may be.

Lots of interesting viewpoints here, a few of which don't appear completely logical.  The goal is to sell the home, not to broadcast to showing prospects how devout the current owner happens to be.  The "eye of the beholder" may very well be offended by a seller's conspicuous display of religious icons or symbols during a showing.

A 2012 Gallup poll reports that 77% of Americans identify themselves as Christian.  18% of Americans do not have a specific religious identity, including not only people of other religions, but also those who are non-religious.

If a seller wishes to risk excluding nearly one-fifth of the population by displaying religious symbols during the showing process, that is their choice. Proselytize all you wish, but doing so when you are searching for a buyer is not a particularly prudent business decision.

I ask sellers to remove as many personal staff as they can( first of all their personal pictures, valuables, and their religious items, if possible).
