South Pasadena CA Historic Ostrich Farm Lofts

For Sale Market Update

Ostrich Farm Lofts - South Pasadena Unique and Historic Living 1010 Sycamore AvenueThis is a recap of market activity for Ostrich Farm Lofts in South Pasadena.  Living up to its name, the location was the original site of the first ostrich farm in the United States in the late 1800s.  It has been said that the original ostriches made the journey from their native South Africa to Texas before eventually arriving by train to what is now the Ostrich Farm Lofts. The property addresss is 1010 Sycamore Avenue near Pasadena Avenue.

Although the trip was not entirely successful, the surviving 18 ostriches at one point grew to over 100.  During the early 20th century, visitors could experience ostrich drawn carriage rides and buy ostrich related items at the factory store.  It later turned into a clothing factory and outlet before an extensive transformation into 53 loft spaces in 2006.

South Pasadena Loft Living - Ostrich Farm Lofts 1010 Sycamore AveThe time of the transformation was difficult as Southern California faced challenging real estate times.   In 2009, there was an auction held to sell the remaining units at discounted prices.

The lofts range in size from approximately 700 to over 2000 square feet of living in a variety of single and multi-level floor plans. There is a lobby entrance which has an art gallery feel to it along with an interior garden area.   The units feature open floor plans, high ceilings, expansive windows, exposed ducting and concrete floors. Some have terrace areas.  Kitchens and baths were designed with European style cabinetry and sophisticated finishes along with washer-dryer connections in the unit.   Parking is secured.

South Pasadena Real EstateThe South Pasadena location is at the city border of Los Angeles (Garvanza/ Highland Park). South Pas has a small town feel but with big city conveniences.

It is close to the Arroyo Seco Parkway(110) plus the Gold Line light rail station at Mission and Meridian where the weekly Farmers Market is held. You will also find unique shopping and dining in the neighborhood in addition to award winning public schools and popular community services and events.

Hi Michael - That's a great story about that development, with a great name to go along with it. The appeal of the current units shows that the market has recovered strongly from the days of that auction. Interested buyers should be aware that your extensive market knowledge would be a huge benefit to them.

Thanks very much for stopping by and your comments on the Ostrich Farm lofts complex in South Pasadena.  The interesting history, name and transformation to unique living spaces makes this one of the loft/condo communities that I have received many inquiries over the years.

Michael,

What an interesting history, and I like the building's industrial feel, and the sculpture on the premises.  Loft spaces are always in demand, they land themselves to a creative style of living...There is a large ostrich farm in the wine country next to the Hitching Post, and ostrich is on the menu...EEK and Yuck!

I had a pet ostrich as a toddler when we lived in Saudi Arabia, that my father rescued and brought back to health.  I called her Violetta, and then she left to meet her kind of bird. LOL A

Alexandra Ron & Alexandra Seigel -- anytime we can relate an interesting story about real estate, it only enhances a property.  While loft living may not be an ideal match for everyone, there is a portion of the buying public who love the open, creative spaces.

I first wrote of Ostrich Farm Lofts a number of years ago and it remains one of my highest ranking(top 20 based on number of clicks) blog posts on AR.  I typically receive a few contacts per month for this complex -- nothing has yet let to anything concrete from these particular "leads" but it is interesting to see what makes someone pick up the phone or write an email.

Thanks for sharing your memory of Violetta.  And what type of wine is suggested to pair with ostrich?   I am going to a wedding reception(they are calling it a party) next month at Saddle Creek Lodge in Calabasas where exotic food is a specialty.

Michael,

The brand Ostrich Farm Lofts is a great one.  It has the contradiction of the traditional "farm" and the modern "lofts".  I would surmise that it attracts people based on that.  As far as leads and phone calls I am not surprised that it happened.

I don't intend to taste ostrich. ever .  Since it is in the game world, syrah or cab franc would go well with it.  Although we like Syrah or the Aussie version shiraz, we don't like how quickly it makes one loopy, it is higher in alcohol compared to other wines 12% at 14-16% .   We have been to Saddle Creek Lodge twice. both time by invitation, and it is not high on our list nor is game.  Wild fish is as gamy as we get!  Enjoy the party.  A

Alexandra Ron & Alexandra Seigel --

I agree with your thoughts about the contradiction of the words Farm and Lofts -- elements  of  vintage yet modern.

I'm not putting ostrich on my "must try" dining list either although I do like Syrah or Shiraz yet not as much as a Pinot Noir.

This will be my second trip to Saddle Creek -- the previous time was also by invitation.  The space is interesting.  I admit I was a bit surprised when I was told this was the choice for the event -- I'll leave it at that.
